Can someone explain me something about tanks

Can someone explain to me why my IS-2 with 122mm cannon cannot penetrate the 80mm frontal armor of a panther?

And why panther 75mm cannon can hit kill my is-2 100mm front armor?

I’m going to need a good explanation to understand this

Gun of IS-2 can penetrate up to 160 mm of armor, but when the Panther is angled its frontal plate can have up to 140- 160 mm of thickness. When adding it to an impact angle this will likely give a ricochet.

Panther can kill IS-2 in one shot, because its gun can penetrate 135 mm of steel, while the turret of IS-2 has only 100- 120 mm of thickness in some places and only 50 mm in the turret ring (its weak spot).

I would assume the ammunition used plays a big part

Panthers never appear to be angled. Actually you can check for yourself in squad test mode

Do you think I was using anti infantry ammo?

No, different tanks use different tank rounds. Maybe the tank rounds currently available to the Is-2 in game just aren’t very good. For example some people love the premium panzer 4 E in moscow because it has access to different ammo than the regular panzer 4 E. The gun of the Is-2 definitely contributes to it’s penetration power, but its not everything. Hopefully in the future we have more options for what tank rounds we take into battle.

I have to agree with you in part. First because this is very broken and with a slow is2 I’m an easy target for any player who started playing today and who has a panther.

But with the same ammo I can relatively easily penetrate the frontal armor of a Tiger I. Indeed. Tiger I to my is-2 looks like a big potato asking to be baked

soviet ww2 steel was poorly manufactured :upside_down_face:

you know, tractor factory and such…

soviet ww2 steel was poorly manufactured and the ammunition is of dubious origin

Go to the practice range and learn weak points. The IS-2 does not guarantee “tanking” the high velocity rounds from the Panther. The 122mm HE rounds are what the IS2 is really about. If you are hunting tanks, hop in the T34-85. The IS2 is not a great tank destroyer in this game, just good

Neither of which is true

Basically - Panther 80mm armour is sloped, and if a shell hits it horizontally then it presents up to 160mm f linear distance to penetrate -

IS-2 has a large section of its armour that is not sloped much at all - so 100mm of armour is “only” needing about 110mm of penetration to punch through - the model in Enlisted is the top 1 of the diagrams below - you can see that here is a nearly vertical section of front hull armour at the top of the glacis - that is the weak point.

image

In late 1944 they fixed the weak spot by making the whole glacis plate a continuous slope - that is the bottom diagram above… arguably this is the one that should be modelled for “Berlin” - all the photos I can find show it and not he earlier one, including the famous “Moltke Bridge” photo of destroyed equipment (at bottom)

Also - the Panther gun is a high velocity anti-tank weapon with muzzle velocity 935 m/s (3,070 ft/s), the IS-2 122mm gun is a moderate velocity field artillery piece with muzzle velocity 806 m/s (2,640 ft/s) - that explains quite a lot of the performance difference.

I don’t want to ruin your fun, but its really just programming & code.

~180-220mm

Can you verify that? In Warthunder it goes no higher than 205mm. In Enlisted its max pen is 161mm (doesn’t say range) if the source I’m looking at is accurate (which it should be)

In war thunder

In enlisted his ammo is terrible

ok yeah. In enlisted they have neutered a lot of the munitions.

Is-2 161mm instead of 205mm
Panzer IV F1 38mm instead of 51mm

etc etc

Isn’t it 50 mm?

It pierces the mask of the T34 gun
