Can a soldier use the turret machinegun on a tank?

I did try to jump on a tank and use the machine gun on the top of the turret but couldn’t man it. This was done during ww2, and in fact, the most decorated US soldier, Infantry Lt. Audie Murphy manned the machine gun of a burning m-10 and got a medal of honor for this act. If it is not possible, I suggest that the machine gun on the top of the tank turret can be manned by a soldier and not just by a tanker. If it is possible, then ignore this suggestion.

the roof machineguns are already used by the tank’s commanders.
meaning that a player when driving a tank, uses both machineguns.
although, i’m not sure if the commander is in charge or who else.

but it’s not meant for other people to use it. like soldiers on foot.
as you might potentially give away your, and the tank position to the enemy.
usually something that you would like to avoid. or you will just make that player angry at you.

personally, i wouldn’t mind. but knowing that back in the alphas, players could have just entered in another player tank and mess with it. so it’s best if this doesn’t happen anymore.
( you can still use the tank if it’s missing some crew memeber, but i higly suggest to ask first. )

anyway, cheers^^.

As a tank commander in real life, the job of the infantry is to protect the tank from enemy infantry, especially in anything like house to house fighting…(a tankers nightmare). Having a ground pounding grunt on the external turret machine gun is another set of eyes to not only see enemy infantry, but to perform maximum prejudice against said infantry. Visibility from within the tank is limited, so a grunt on the turret is very handy, especially when he can communicate with the tank commander. Don’t ask me how I know this.

Dmitriy Loza, my favorite WWII tank combat primary source, also said the same thing about infantrymen climbing onto the tank to better direct the commander. Also about infantrymen ratfucking the pleather off of the seats for their boots.

I’ve actually used that article’s 12km/h number for firing on the move in both this and War Thunder, and to success.

I try to mark targets near a tank, but as with all target marking, it gets ignored.

One thing I know that is not in the game is the ability to swivel or trotate the tank hatch. For example, the T 34 tank hatch, after opening, could be rotated around the hatch so the hatch itself could be used for some cover by the tank commander when he is looking out of the hatch. The hatch standing up could block some rifle fire and provide cover. For an example, see the Russian Movie “White Tiger” scene where a soldier looking out the hatch rotates the open hatch around the opening as he looks for targets.

Before that, I would like to see smoother viewport controls, and the ability of the commander to fire without turning out.

I’ll usually fight with the hatch open so I can see better and because there’s no consequence for the commander getting shot.
