I think it would be a cool as well as quality of life implementation of the game to also allow radio operators to call in artillery or smoke, not only by using the map, but using binoculars and pressing an assigned button to use arty and smoke immediately through the said binoculars. Here are some examples.
Let’s say you spot a tank, use your binoculars to ping it and immediately call arty on the location.
Some other examples.
I think having binoculars to call in arty makes another quick easy way to call in precise, fast and quick support when you don’t have pings from your teammates or want to directly send in artillery. Also think of the immersion, when seeing the radio operator or commander using binoculars, and yelling artillery strike at this location, while seeing the radio operator handling the command, all while seeing an immediate precise strike. Pretty immersive too!
Example of Operator squad working together, imagine binoculars implemented Allies
Here’s a really
Cool German radio operator squad with binoculars in action. They had the smart idea of making them usable in trenches as not to get shot, could be a unique only German item. Pretty awesome if implemented for axis in all campaigns.

It’s like this way in another old favorite game of mine
and I much prefer that method of calling arty down with marks from binoculars.
This game is way to easy calling arty and there is no risk involved.
It would at least the force radio operator in the match to
get closer to a cap point before blasting it silly.
I agree with this, this would limit artillery spam, and allow a more balanced and realistic approach to calling in artillery. I didn’t think about this but, having this method of calling in artillery would definitely balance the artillery spam and add a greater deal of skill and interactive gameplay to using and calling artillery.
I think it would be even more interesting if the artillery fire depended on one player to manage the cannons battery, let’s assume there are two such players per team. He will be shown on the map where the enemy has been detected after the radio operator marks the point with his binoculars. The gun operator will have to aim just like with the mortar.
