So obviously binoculars are in the game, and provide a very clear and obvious use. Speaking from a purely infantry perspective (as I have never actually attempted to use them until just recently, and by extent haven’t tried to equip a tanker with binos) however they are kind of pointless.
I mean sure I can get a better picture of the enemy at range, but if I’m not using a rifle with a sniper scope I’m unlikely to be engaging at that range anyway, and if I am using a rifle with a sniper scope - why would I bother to swap to my binoculars when I have a scope?
Queue the Better Binoculars music, where the enemy markers made by you or by allies using the V button when you have your binoculars out will, just like when aiming the mortar on the mortar class, give you an exact distance marker in metres from wherever you are.
The purpose of this is twofold and affects mainly snipers and mortar units (as the ranges at which binoculars would be better to use than kit a soldier already posses, or naked eyeballing it, are available in very limited circumstances):
The sniper
He gets into his sniping position - it’s far away from the enemy - and bullet drop does exist in Enlisted.
So he pulls out his binoculars and after spotting a group of enemies drops a marker, he now knows the distance from himself to that marker and the group of enemies, and can adjust his aim when he swaps to his rifle to start shooting for the bullet drop.
The Mortarman
Mortarmen obviously see the distance from themselves to a marker whenever they aim with the mortar, but this often means you have to get relatively close to an enemy position to have the sightlines to lay a marker (assuming your teammates aren’t doing so, or doing so ineffectively) which nullifies the purpose of your mortar somewhat. This fact both makes mortar usage riskier and less rewarding thanks to those risks. Now however, as you know your mortar can fire over roughly 234m you can take up a position much further away and zoom in with your binoculars. As your binoculars will tell you the exact distance from a marker of enemies you’ve spotted you will automatically know can I or can I not shell them.
As a result mortars suddenly become more viable and more effective, or else you’re probably better off just going somewhere secluded and dropping all of your shells right on an objective (which you can still do anyway if needed). This doesn’t even make mortars overpowered either, as time is still required to scout and drop shells, and there’s a hardcap on the number of mortar resupplies each life. It does however give the binos more purpose whilst benefitting a less used class too!
As for the counterargument for the mortarman, wherein you could just say get into that same position and drop markers without scopes/binos and just normal vision then swap to the mortar sure you could do that, but that goes against the point of this suggestion - To give the binos a purpose.
Therefore, make it so that when using the binoculars you also get the distance markers in metres from your position to the marker like when aiming with mortars. As it opens up an actual practical use for the binoculars, which otherwise is either covered by other equipment on the classes the binoculars would actually have a purpose on or is simply unviable to try and run in the game (as you’d die or simply be ineffective).
