Battle of Manila
3 February – 3 March 1945
This battle was one of the most horrific battles in the Pacific. Often regarded as “The Stalingrad of Asia”. The battle resulted in allied victory, and ended almost 3 years of occupation of Japanese forces within the Philippines.
The Americans attacked the city, fighting with the Japanese and an excess of 100,000 civilians died. 250,000 total casualties estimated. Much of the cities architecture was destroyed.
There was 35,000 American troops, 12,500 Marines and sailors with an additional 4,500 soldiers on the Japanese side.
This would finally give a more Urban combat environment within the Pacific.
