Some ideas that could potentially balance such guns if they are ever to come.
Note: I count 100 belts as very high capacity but that’s just my opinion and should be this changed if necessary.
No ADS unless mounted
When not mounted, soldier can only “brace” instead of aiming (also it’s significantly slower than ads). This will force him to walk and it will make hipfire more accurate and recoil more manageable. Without bracing, gun would be very hard to control even at close ranges. This mechanic is present for example in such hardcore milisims as BF5.
Similarly to grenade launchers, long belts can be a separate ammo and can change how the gun behaves.
attachment off - MG has <100 round belt, works like now (probably with one less mag for balance)
attachment on - MG has >100 round belt, works like described in point 1 (maybe with even more movement penalties)
This gives a lot of flexibility to the player and can be an interesting gameplay feature.
Separate gun unlock and belt unlock to reduce TT clutter
Simply speaking I don’t think we need MG42, MG42 (100), MG42(200) etc. So instead, make the gun unlock once as a base (current MG42 br4 in this example) and then make further unlocks long belt attachments that can be added to this gun (100 round attachment that can be added to the gun instead of MG42(100)). Maybe make it a gun upgrade to unlock attachment slot.
Overheating
After continuously firing, the gun should jam/stop. I’d say this should happen after non-stop shooting about 75 rounds (based on my experience), cooldown from 99% to 0% should take about 2-3s and cooling down from 100% should take about 4-6s (potential for barrel change animation where applicable).
Imo implementing those ideas as a whole makes the most sense but theoretically speaking each point can work on it’s own with some adjustments.

require mounting of some degree or a second soldier, or a fictional backpack, hip pack, fannypack, no one with any accuracy is going to hip or shoulder fire an mg with over a hundred rounds. we all know the stinger at 200 is fictional meant to be a box of ammo cut in half thus 100 rounds.
just use a window frame, a wall, a car, car window anything to take weight of any soldier that is not an uber japanese at gunners. mgs with 100+ rounds were operated by teams of 2 to three men not one soldier.

because my dud 100 round mgs belong at br5 and more than that higher my dude.

For the points about making the belt lengths and adjustable thing, I doubt the devs will ever do that as it means disconnecting the guns from specific BRs.
Infinite ammo HMG is at BR1. I don’t think a much weaker MG that has to reload and can move only at a crawl when “aiming” is a big danger.
Also no BR3, only BR4-5 where they are already. But who would bother reading.
This is straight up BS. US has M1919A4 and USSR has Maxim Tokariev with probably many more to come.

a nearly infinite gun that has so much ammo in one mag it should not be allowed to reload
will only not be able to aim down sights
will only be given an overheating mechanic
will double or triple the magazine capacity of existing guns
what is need
reduce squad from 3 to 2
premium from 5 to 3 if premiums get this upgrade
limit the total ammo carried to 300
1 reload for 150 mag 3 for 100
if you are bringing 10-0 to br4 and 150 to br5 where does 200 or more go
a way of identifying these high capacity freaks

or is the us getting a M1919A4 1200 rpm at br4 and a 1500 rpm at br5
