Does it do f***k all? Because while the Panzer IIIN does seem to occasionally benefit from it. It could well be my imagination.
So does it do anything?

Its mainly for AT rifles. By BR 2 people probably arent shooting at you with AT rifles anymore
it was def effective against soviet ATRs last time i checked, as i had to scoot around a Pz 3N to even damage it as opposed to just shooting Pz IV in the side, doubt that it’s supposed to be any effective against anything else tho
Seems to me it was supposed to offer some protection against HEAT stuff, historically.
No, german side skirts were designed to reduce the effectiveness of soviet AT rifle, not of HEAT warhead.
Not really. Spaced armor isn’t properly modeled for most things. Just wait till a HEAT shell goes straight through the counter weights and right into the ammo on the Super Pershing
I know they were DESIGNED to protect against ATRs, but my understanding was that spaced armor did help limit the penetration of HEAT stuff. I mean; I’m wrong quite often.
They are effectively spaced armour though, so they do work on HEAT shells.
DF made them obsolete by giving Soviets M1 Bazooka.
Soviets when given the choice of design their own crap or just take near infinite numbers of someone else’s crap
Exept the concept of spaced armor is a bit more complicated with HEAT.Some modern HEAT rounds detonate a few meters away from the target (stand off distance ) to enable the jet to better form and with it increase the penetration compared to a direct hit.
During WW2 HEAT projectiles where still in their infantcy but so was their testing.
It is likely that even the early warheads had some kind of idea stand off distance which just never was accieved due to impact fuzes. This would mean all WW2 era warheads would use the 0 cm metric unless a very thin spaced armor (like a skirt) allowed the jet to form for 20cm ahead of the main armor.
Due to the short distance between the skirt and the main armor there might not be sufficient space for the jet to again unfocus unless you hit the skirt on an extreme angle (assuming that the stand off distance existed even for WW 2 era HEAT that was of varying quality).
they work, but only if the projectile hits at an acute angle
There is no proof it ever worked. Even the Germans tested it and it did nothing
Pz III - IV have weak side armor so you can’t really angel them too much and I will take what ever extra armor I can get. With side skirts on I’m less likely to get penetrated by AT guns at sharper angles. It does help you, but it’s not that noticeable.
