Any way of enchacing mortar squads?

Everyone knows mortar teams offering less than other type of squads. I dont say they cant be good at the hands of skillful players, but if the team wont help scouting enemies mortarmen are blind. Is there any way to add a little power to them? Since ampulomets are present in flamethrower teams, AT guns in bomber squads, maybe mortar squad’s engineer could place mg nest to prepare a little defense if the squad is attacked while bombarding? Or maybe give the radioman of the squad could use a unique ability: he is given information through radio about the enemy team, and 3-5 automatic pings of the enemy squads appears (for this player or all players you choose).

You add binoculars to your team and find an observation point. This way you can handle yourself.
Another way is to fire at the last known enemy position after respawning.
Another way is to set a special marker on the map in alternate map mode.

And what they could add for the engineer in the mortar unit is the construction of a heavy or medium mortar.
And the radio operator could call in a reconnaissance plane that would show the position of all enemy structures (boxes, cannons, sandbags and heavy machine gun positions) and vehicles for a short while.

It would be great if the mortar squad’s engineer could build a larger, more accurate mortar.

buff mortars
make them great again

more damage & more ammo

well the only way is to increase your output, which means many ammo boxes, and having a friend or two friends build 3 ammo boxes each for you, and have one person spot live time for you from a great vantage point

but even with all that in place, and let’s say that you are also extremely knowledgeable of the maps and experienced with common spots and troop movements and rally placements

you still have to deal with the huge issue plaguing mortars, and that was the huge nerf that was given them by the devs

which basically made them so innacurate, that they are largely not worth using anymore

they nerfed their damage, they nerfed their accuracry like crazy, they nerfed them into the ground

it feels terrible to even play them anymore

and so the anti mortar crowds of this game got their wish, they destroyed the mortars, and they aren’t really worth playing with

it went from being one of the most fun and unique mechanics in this game, to one of the worst

if you want them enhanced, you would need the devs to change it back to the glory days when they were actually good

bad idea, but would make them fair and somewhat useful = much shorter range, but extreme high area damage.

unfortunately I don’t think there is a way to buff mortars unless they put friendly fire on

Yeah mortars are a cool idea, but in game they just suck.

The majority of the time you use mortars you aren’t going to hit anything. That’s the entire point of indirect fire

After you fire a shell you can see on the map where it landed so you can use that to approximate roughly where the enemies are.

And I’ve suggested new mortars

get them thooooose

I think they should just buff mortar damage.

They should add the M982 shell to the game.
Actually even better would be if they let US mortar squads build the Davy Crocket.

I had a few ideas (and others in this forum @61839981 ) that could make the mortar squad a little more unique

  • Squad buildable, Mortar Pit/artillery piece, Contains a heavy mortar/small artillery that you can order your AI to mount. These AI will react to the player using binoculars and left clicking where they want a round to be fired. (Mounted AI wont be effected by tether)

Essentially it would be an accurate selective Artillery squad, but it requires Line of sight/player to spot with Binocs.

So I’ve actually had this discussion with a number of people over the past couple of months, and I’ve been working on detailing out a good solution.

Unique structure: Mortar Nest

Its a nest with sandbags around it for the mortarmen themselves, in addition to a small wooden tower type structure. When you go up to it, you enter the “tower” like you would get on a mounted MG. The mortar guys in your squad would take their place in the mortar pit.

  • The type of mortars used is entirely dependent on what they are equipped with.

The ammunition instead of trying to feed out of ammo boxes instead feeds out of the mortar pit reserves, just like an AT field gun does.

The player, which is in the “tower” is given a pair of binoculars with which to order the shots to be fired. Mortars can only be fired at pings, which can either be your own, or those dropped by teammates. So if you are trying to use it solo, you will need line of sight to the target. However, if you have good teammates, you can still fire on their pings.

As far as COUNTERING it:

  • The troops operating it can still be shot out.
  • Hitting it with explosives could cause the whole thing to detonate, resulting in a large explosion and the most definite destruction of it.
  • The “tower” would make it much more visible both to ground troops and aircraft, so it can be spotted easier and taken out.

This suggestion gives it the ability to drop shells in larger volume, with less time spent on ammo boxes, and accuracy that can be adjusted easier as the spotter.

I wait for a few kills from my mortar then place my ping there, keep moving my aim to follow the kills.
