I find the current way we cycle soldiers or switch to a specific one to be inconvenient. Which makes it hard to use in the heat of a fight. There are problems with both methods in my opinion.
- Simply cycling through is problematic for obvious reasons. It takes a while to get to the one you want, and you might accidentaly cycle right through it. (This is why the selection wheel was added in the first place.)
- The selection wheel was a really good addition, but it uses the same wheel that we use for comms etc. This means that we need to click once after we picked the soldier we want. Additionally, you will inevitably cycle once when you open the wheel. This means that you camera moves twice, which makes orientation more difficult.
The suggestions:
- Change the wheel’s function. Holding the key shouldn’t cycle soldiers. When you release the key over the soldier you want, it should swap to that soldier without the need to click it.
- Change the function of cycle or add a new key, which changes soldier to the one you are looking at. This means that pressing it would swap to the soldier that’s the closest to the position you are looking at. This would let you do more precise and faster swaps.
- Make the soldier you are swapping to look in the direction of the previous soldier’s facing, which would reduce the level of disorientation one might experience on a swap. This wouldn’t be an instant turn as the soldier could turn over time while the camera movement is in progress as you swap soldiers.
Overall I believe these changes would make the experience more fluid and easier to use overall.
