AI infantry for tank squads

it came to my mind, that some of the vehicles with lower crew count may not be able to bring all of their soldier capacity with them, so how about tankers that cant occupy vehicle crew slots instead spawn as infantry that escorts the vehicle into the battle?

i know that this escort would most likely run around until its eventually run over by the tank or killed by enemy, but hey, its better than nohting and light tanks finnaly get at least some advantage over heavy ones (stalingrad T-70 and KV-1 come to mind)

for vehicles that have some space on which soldiers could sit on, spawn with soldiers sitting on top and gunning enemies from there and vehicle commander (player) should be able to order his infantry to exit the vehicle (for during the combat) and come back on (during travel / ā€œblitzkriegā€)

Tanks attract a lot of attention so whatever infantry following would probably die within 5 seconds so this would be a kinda pointless change, that said I doubt it’d be a negative change and it’d serve more as an xp piƱata for the enemy team that an adequate protection for your tank so I wouldn’t have a problem with this

Neat but lacks historical accuracy

not necessarily

Its a workable idea, as long as your tank commander can trigger the dismount and the rider squad keeps a vigil all around the tank. Your rate of advance would need to slow down to match your foot sloggers so that they can cover you adequately, but overall its something that could work. Given the dodgy AI though most of the lads would die to random snipes from the other side of the map :frowning:

plus they can shoot from the tank. which would make it kinda OP since the AI still has the whole ā€˜ā€˜aimbot’’ problem

US, GER, Italian and SU troops rode on the tanks. the japanese did not. at least, not in big numbers since it was forbidden.

and your statement is invalid, look at a documentary or read a book lol

Well that’s the trade off I guess, they can spray and pray off the tank, but I wouldn’t like to guess the accuracy or lack thereof, on the other hand any infantry caught riding a tank, is XP piniata for the shooter. I would dismount the riders out of contact so that they can disperse to the sides. Hopefully they would train the AI to parallel the tank and clear the flanks, rather than shoot frontally - something the tank is more than capable of.

i agree with you on that. but with the current… erm ā€˜ā€˜state’’ of the AI i do not see that happening for a while. but it would be hecking cool to have it in the game! imagine two SU T-34’s rusing towards you in Stalingrad or Moscow with infantry on the back. would be cool as heck

All of the AI problems are static infantry, generally I don’t get aimboted from moving troops. They will always pause aimbot and kill you, before resuming movement.

There are very few options for shooting with infantry on the move, and if you take the motorcycle sidecar option as a good comparison, then the sidecar MG can’t hit the side of a barn at 10 paces when its moving. When the bike comes to a halt is when all the magic starts to happen.

true, but i would very much prefer a more realistic AI for dismounted infantry. so its kinda fair for the other team is all i’m saying. the idea is awesome

I think those are normal infantry. I mean the you don’t send tankers without a tank. They had valuable skills that were too valuable to let them die.

Again I’m talking about tankers. They had valuable skills, you don’t just send them in without a tank.

It wont work. Not enough players and small maps. Ww2 Tanks cant fire up from 2-3 km in reality. Tank clash distance in this game is firing from a zero distance compare to infantry. Also tanks dont march without its squadrons in reality. Which includes panzergrenadiers, motorised infantry and other smalller patrol vehicles. Tanks are not sole entities in real war.

they can get a diffrent outfit if they spawn outside of the tank

That’d be neat if rifleman or something else follow a tank. It was a common tactic in WW1 and I’d like to see it after AI improve.

well, im a bit concerned that riflemen would enter tank and drive it in case its not completely filled up at the start.

They shouldn’t let that happen. Especially since rifleman don’t have the skills to operate a tank.

exactly, and thats why the crew that doesnt enter tank are acutally tankman class

btw, im pretty sure that it doesnt take a lot of skills to operate a ww2 era tank, anyone could use machinegun or toss ammo, everyone that can drive could be a driver and it probably wouldnt take long to get used to operating main cannon…

It depends on the tank… But yeah it’s not rocket science. But historically speaking tanks were a skill which could be honed to a very high level.
