While it would be interesting you suggest something far too powerful.
A squad that consists of 3 or 4 people and can go behind enemy lines is an interesting idea. I’d like to add it but it needs limitations.
I’ve suggested something like this many years ago. A spy or espionage like aspect I think would be cool.
Maybe we should only keep the greyzone around spawn points. That’d be fair overall wether or not we add this commando class.
I personally HATE the recent change to make the advanced spawn points immediately available as protected zones after capturing a point. I never “fall back” after the enemy attackers capture and want to fight it out to prevent them from easily advancing. I don’t remember the exact map but yesterday I was in Normandy (one of the ruins) and the cap got taken while we were actively defending the point (they just slowly overtook the point.) I tried to stand my ground and take out the advancing troops, but spawns started happening about 15m away from me as the default spawn point advanced and they could shoot me but every time I shot them, nothing happened but a shield displaying. That’s absolute bull crap. That idiotic spawn protection needed to be play tested better. I think keeping A protected spawn in the back is a great idea so that you can’t just spawn camp and leave the opponents with absolutely no way to respond.
I think that problem should have been solved with the addition of a protected spawn rather than the complete changing of the way spawns work.
I added a suggestion a while back to create an “offsides” modeling for grey zone, but that idea didn’t gain any traction. That idea would have the grey zone only accessible if the other side camped in it for long enough to trigger the grey zone to deactivate to allow for infiltration missions. If you’re interested in that idea, you should see it in the suggestion list. If you’d like to talk about grey zone changes, I’d certainly be open to that conversation.
Why do you think that’s “something far too powerful?” You can already have any random soldier pick up any random weapon from the ground. What’s really the difference between that and having a small squad with handpicked load outs?
The weapons from the ground have significantly less ammo. You also can’t pick up AT weapons and other specialties.
Also the way you described it suggested they have more than two weapon slots. That’s just bad, speed is determined by the weight of the current thing you’re holding.
You suggest supersoldier capable of everything, why have anything else if that’s the best?
Touching an ammo box completely negates that. You get to reload them, even enemy weapons if you reach an enemy ammo box; it’s fantastic!
I know. That’s silly.
No,no. I’m not suggesting anything like that. I’m suggesting that for the 2 slots, a Commando can put anything in them.
I already mentioned that a Commando that tries to carry extra heavy gear would have a speed and stamina penalty. You could counterbalance that with a “conditioning” 5 star perk or something like that, but that obviously takes away other important perks. The point is that you would be ABLE to take anything but that probably would be inadvisable unless you have a very specific goal in mind and can achieve it.
I think they become extremely useful soldiers, but I am saying that things should be done to keep them from being treated as super soldiers (although you should expect them to be very good soldiers…they’re Commandos)
Like partisans?
I guess that partisans would be a useful corollary for the Soviets although I think the OGBM would be the better inspiration (OGBM trained the Soviet partisans)
The KSK would be for the Germans.
The Teishin Shudan would likely be the closest analog for the Japanese.
(In Ahnold voice)
“If you give a man a jingle, he will jingle for one day.
But if you teach a man to jingle, he vill jingle all ze vay”
Maybe instead of being called Commandos, they should be called Raiders so that there is a larger range of squads that can be added to this class.
No matter if partisan, commando, etc, they all have the same job and abilities.
Commando would be the approriate term for the class of “Special Forces” soldier. Whatever they’re called, as long as the concept is the same and the name for the class isn’t something like “Muppet” I wouldn’t really care. So either “Raider” or “Commando” seem like they would be fine but Commando is the more expressive term.
British called them “Commandos.”
Germans called them “Brandenburgers”/“Freikorps”/Kommandos (I initially said KSK, but KSK was founded WAY post-war)
Soviets called them “Otdelnly Gwardieskij Batalion Minerow” (“Separate Minefield Guard Battalion”)
Japanese called them Teishin Shudan (“Raiding Group”)
US called them “Marine Raiders”
I’d be fine if they kept the troop class name as “Raider” and made the squad name carry the “Commando” name, that’d open up opportunities for the addition of the USMC Frogmen, Spetsnaz, or “IJN 1st Raiding Group” They’d certainly make coastal/river destruction maps much more fun
Famous Examples
I’d think it weird to just give the ability to take anything and everything.
Now instead of a whole new class it could be a squad of riders or just a squad that can have a 4 total of any combination of soldiers.
As for the weight, it only measures by what’s in your hand, changing that for them should change it for all.
Granted it’s done right I think it’d be a great addition to the game
letting people into greyzones is cancer, just play train escort for that signature exploit pain.
letting soldiers equip any weapon is also way too powerful and exploitable, Im looking at you Soviet paratroopers spamming 6 ARs/SMGs.
wow this would create so many deadbeat teammates who hide 1km away from objectives and take potshots at people the whole time instead of building rallies
I would expect that a “Special Forces” slot would need to be added to the roster with restricted quantities allowed in a match at any one time. If they’re effective as a sniper from 1km away, more power to them and the resolution of their display.
I’d think a 2 or 3 Commando squad limit would be more than enough. Even if the restriction was set at 1 as a means to get them into the game, I’d really like that.
Good idea. Like I suggested in a separate post, Commandos should be armed with silenced weapons, and make less noise when moving as a passive skill/perk. I’m not sure they should be armed with all that heavy weaponry though. Also, I’m scared they’ll end up as a premium squad…
The silent movement/“swift sneak” perk seems like a great idea. I think the silenced weapons would work into a small companion idea that I have.
The way to counterbalance that would be to have them accumulate weight penalties from both their primary and secondary weapons. If I understand the current game rules correctly, the weight penalties only occur for the weapon currently in your hand. Commandos should take both penalties. A class specific “conditioning” perk can be added to counterbalance the weight penalty at the expense of points that would be useful for other perks. Taking very heavy gear could reduce the “swift sneak” perk.
I’d rather they be able to carry anything that you wanted them to take on their mission than restrict them from being able to. You can already have an anti-tanker pick up a BAR on the battlefield and carry it with the bazooka he entered the round with.
Keep in mind that, as with all soldier classes, you’d have to choose whether you wanted to give them secondary weapons or backpacks/ammo pouches. So if you decide to give them max flexibility on weaponry by unlocking secondaries, ALL of them will have to to in without extra ammo or med packs. You’d almost have to dedicate one soldier’s secondary slot to an engineer’s hammer and if he gets dropped, your guys are very likely screwed.
All that to say thqat I don’t think it’s as big of a problem as you seem to suggest.
Now to that “companion idea” I mentioned. It would be its own new concept, so bear with me a touch. If they held an event that provided a Commando Squad (of whichever faction) but it only arrives as a 1/4 squad with ONE Commando and no ability to “Enlist” new Commandos. Now, every event, they add a single Commando soldier as the “super grand prize” that you earn if you complete 100% of tasks. In most events, the main prize of the event is done by completing something like 6 of 9 tasks then if you complete more, you get things like appearance change orders (whoopty do. I have 770 of them) but if they put a single Commando soldier from a focused faction as the “9 of 9” prize, they’d automatically have every event have something meaningful to keep going towards. Then if you hit “9 of 9”, you Enlist a random Commando (i.e. have the Enlist action inaccessible from the main Enlistment screen but have it run when collecting the Commando prize)
They could add the 1/4 Commando squad as a Premium for people who miss the event.
