This is because (as far as my understanding of the ânew AA systemâ) the 20mm and other AA calibers no longer do precision damage.
Instead, they hit, explode, and the entirety of the damage is spread out in an area around the hit location. Meaning you have to land FAR more hits in that same location, OR hit the areas AROUND what you want to damage and let the damage layer over it.
Meanwhile, the HMG and MG rounds are still precision damage. They damage what they hit, not the area around it. Making it much more possible to break what you are hitting, rather than everything around it.
The devs said they had changed it âbecause AA was too effectiveâ. While I understand they wanted to fix that issue a bit, they should have retained about 75% of the direct damage to what was hit, in addition to the fragmentation radius.
OR
Make the shells airburst when otherwise they would be near misses, inflicting fragmentation damage more frequently and effectively.

Oh well, that explains. So kinda reversed situation as in past with regular plane MGâs it was nexto impossible down IL in moscow, but those 20mm of bf110 ? did the job.

The Bf110 uses twin 30mm cannons and a 37mm nose cannon, all firing HE. Thatâs an entirely different round essentially. After all, it hits like a lightweight tank shell, so itâs definitely going to down planes effectively.
