well its definitely an interesting weapon for BR2 - but also kinda weak overall.
Its only good at medium to long range - if you can make those slow rounds hit to begin with.
But on the other hand the BR IV version is extremely good. Even the 20 rds mag doesn’t bother me at all because how good the gun is. Shame the iron sight is zeroed to 69696969 meters.

Seems to be the only way so that Axis BR III can have some semblance of resistance against zerging Russians these days. I played few BR III matches today and noticed that German players have bigger kills than Russian/Allied players but having a hard time pushing/defending the cap.

My same squads, just decked out a little differently. 
Currently my bottom two squads are in flux as I have been moving squads around so they don’t really have a designated BR level, although they were all BR5 for a while, the middle will probably go back to BR 5 and the bottom to BR3 where it has been.

How does the VG 1-5 compare against Gewehr 41?

VG is a weak gun overall - but has a 30 round mag.
Its basically a semi auto STG for troopers, which is pretty unique for BR3.
I would use it more often if it wouldn’t have a lower rate of fire as other semi autos. Just like M1 Carbine its rate of fire is artificially reduced so that people dont spam fire those guns - which however is the only way those weapons can be used effectively, kinda dumb.

Also VG needs two shots to kill - same as G41, at least when facing Soviet Veteran players.
It shoots faster, but weaker then the Gewehr 41 so almost all my level three rifleman carry the 41. I use them mostly as back up weapons. Personally, I think the VG 1-5 should be level two as it seems to me to have more in common with the M1 Carbine, Smith light rifle(which was I believed dropped to level one), along with the level one Soviet KB-135 and the German 1918/30 semi auto.
BR2-3 is about the only vague resemblance of a ww2 game at this point. Good job there, “devs”.

Shoots slower actually, check the gun descriptions.
If you spam left mouse button VG will shoot noticeably slower than most semi autos like G41, SVT and such.

Yeah, VG 1-5 and M1 Carbine should have Type Otsu fire rate (380rpm base)

Yeah, BR 5 is basically Battlefield five, and BR four is nonexistent.

Yup, you’re correct as I think ROF is 350 G41 vs VG 1-5 320, so other then it’s bigger mag size, not a lot of advantage to using the 1-5 at level three. I still think they should drop it to level two where it’s a closer match to the M1 Carbine.

Played a couple of BR3 German games last night - the key to winning seemed to have 2 components…
1/ turn up
2/ have USA as opposition 
The key to getting a good score eluded me tho - games were too quick!
This is so real hahaha, for some reason when playing against the soviets most german players turned into bots
And then last night (ie next night) exactly the opposite - Germans getting steamrollered by USA - there really is not pattern other than inconsistency!
I’m starting to think the key to winning BR III Germany is:
Don’t play BR III Germany
Play BR III Japan instead.
