Giving the enemy the ability to counter them would make them perfectly balanced
As it stands its low skill low risk moderate reward.
There is zero excuse to allow them to fire without any risk to themselves from outside the map
AA, mortars and tanks in the grey zone are hard to deal with I agree, snipers you can just shoot with a rifle.
I would not mind if the help indicators for mortars was taken away, so you would have to now use the actual mortar sights and no longer be able to receive proximate distances of marked points or enemies. This will make mortars realistic and much harder to use.
They do not need to be harder to use - they are already non-game-breaking and mostly not worth having in your lineup in the first place.
ETA:
And also
Mortars are fine, I used it for a while when leveling Allies, but never used in whole 29lvl Axis since a bit boring to use.
Problem is just about the grey zone, same as grey zone tanks.
Yeah, you can do this, but it’s not proper way to fight with snipers.
How you should do it: sneak behind them, place a mine in their rear end, watch fireworks.
More hardcore version: after placing a mine you should draw sniper’s attention so you can look into his eyes when he explodes.
That is pretty much the only problem I find with mortar right now.
I currently switched to mortarmen and I play with a friend who marks me reliable targets. Only then, or if the cap is open top, is mortar effective with now (finaly) limited ammunition.
Just deny them usage of mortar inside grey zone AND rework grey zone to not be so limiting for defending team. (also keep in mind that grey zones in certain invasions leave literally no space to maneuvre, or only way to exit grey zone is going directly into enemy fire and play sitting duck on the open)
As for the classes such as snipers… I see no problem with them firing from the grey zone, because in order to fire they have to directly face the enemy which they cannot mass kill (they always need to snipe each target separatedly)… if enemy is aware or… alternatively, not braindead, they are very easy to kill.
And long distance snipes is what snipers are supposed to do in the first place so… what´s the problem?
Grey zone is too limiting to the opposing team on many maps too.
You can’t even properly defend a point in some cases because some of the buildings in its immediate vicinity that control it are in the grey zone.
And that is the environment mortars should be forced into? There will be literally no point in carrying them around if only usable weapon will be a rifle.
As long as these issues are not resolved (and possibly shovels to dig a “safe space” are released for the rest of the campaigns) mortars are somewhat acceptable (but still very annoying if used correctly) the way they are right now.
But you would limit mortars, when long distance indirect fire is what they are supposed to be for - even the light platoon level ones?
Mortars are capable of mass killing entire squads, unlike the snipers.
So that is pure pragmatism.
I know that forcing mortars to the actual firefights and open fields is plain stupid.
But until we get shovels for the campaign, we have to work with what we have.
Also, keep in mind this:
lol - you think snipers can’t mass-kill squads?? Really?? I thought you’d been playing this game a while??!!
Snipers needs to pick each targets, not score multiple kills at once. That is my point.
AND snipers are directly in the line of fire, thus it is easy to get rid of them… which is what I already said anyway.
Keeping snipers at least some cover makes sense since they are still vulnerable.
Sure, you can eventually rack up a lot of kills with snipers. However, you are not really the army stopper. I actually enjoy playing snipers, which not only got me snipe kills but I also know how many times I got sniped as well easily. They need more of an buff to be viable choice as a squad in comparison to current meta instead of the nerf. (Of course, they are very useful in Normandy for allies since enemy is in good defensive positions and behind decent cover)
If the grey zone stops being so close to objectives, mortars will be able to survive outside of it.
IF the map layout gives them at least some improvised cover.
Otherwise you will end up in direct line of fire like in Vysokovo invasion.
Its like this on the Tunisia invasion maps actually and they do fine AND allow you to hunt them down
