Most German soldiers did not participate in the war crimes. They also generally referred to themselves as Wehrmacht soldiers. The ones that referred themselves to as Nazi’s were often the ones that actively participated in war crimes. Saying someone wants to be a Nazi is like saying that person wants to commit those war crimes. At that point you go way beyond a simple “joke”.

"Clean Wehrmacht is actually a myth mostly promoted by allies to restore faith in the army. German army during WW2 was infiltrated by ideology almost as much as the soviet one. Now, I´m not saying that every single person serving in soviet or German army was a delusional fanatic, but saying that any of them is clean is not accurate.
It is a very convincing myth, but still a myth.
