Improved AI handling

AI is pretty dumb in this game, however the humans are not, so hows about giving us some better control over AI. Operation flashpoint had a good system for this, maybe look at that. It would be good to select men by say using the F keys, So I click F2 and I get a ghost of my number two solder, I then change his stance and rotation and sit him behind a baricade, he will stay there primarily facing the direction I set him in and defend the area until he is given another order. Anything would probably be better than what we have now, even making the X order work properly would be good. I use it to make the men hang back, sometimes they do actually stay there, but most of the time they just run forward and die…

I would like to add some suggested commands to this thread:

Range of Engagement
Set a range beyond which ai will not initiate fire, and will seek to avoid enemy fire instead of returning it. With options like “Fire at will” “100 m” “50 m” “20 m” “hold your fire”. It is really annoying to be laying low and have the ai decide to try and hit a target 150 meters away using an iron-sighted rifle.

Stances
Specify what stance the ai should take, with options like “No restriction” “Enforce Crouching” “Enforce Crawling”. This one is mainly to force the ai to take cover, as they sometimes like to crawl with you before suddenly standing up and then laying back down.

Movement
Create a couple of settings for how the ai should move and follow you. The ai currently follows you pretty poorly. One of the reasons for this is because it is split between defending an area and following, and waits until you are far away before it decides to stop defending and start following you. Suggested settings for this would be:

  • “unspecified” Use the current ai settings.
  • “strict follow”. Don’t defend areas at all, and follow the player’s movement path. If I jump into a building through a building I want the ai to follow me into the building through the same window.
  • “defend this position” Force the ai into the defensive state, and have each bot choose a different viewing angle and try to find cover. If inside a building or an area with limited andles of attack let multible bots choose the same door/window to watch but spread them out. Once they have chosen a position keep the bots stationary with minimal movement unless they are engaged in a firefight. This mode would work perfectly with Expleto’s suggestion.

I’d settle for them assuming the same stance as me. If I’m prone, trying to get the drop on someone, they shouldn’t be running around firing at random.
