Instead of punishing for desertion immediately, it’s important to tackle the reason why people desert, if you are going to implement a harsh measure and punishment against desertion only then you will only strain the problem even further

I leave matches for a lot of reasons

  1. Real life strikes, You can’t simply deny responsiblities you have, can you? Univ got my hands tied up
  2. Connection Interrupted or Lag
  3. Bad game mode, I rarely play conquest and train as they have extremely poor exp turnout
  4. Poorly designed maps, any maps where AI gets stuck is immediately a leave for me
  5. Bad players, I’m not going to carry bad players, they’re simply not worth my time

The devs can probably solve 3-4, 2-5 if they become more competent. But again, treat the cause not the symptoms

Do you think I should be punished for something I can’t control?

Since the current penalty for quitting is 0, I see no problem in listening to the OP and making it double.

I can only speak for myself, but generally i dont quit that much.

I do however quit if:

1.) Match drags on too long. There are times where i cannot commit to more than 1h per match

2.) Private life interferes, need to help my wife with something unplanned etc.

3.) Bad internet, need to restart the modem.

4.) I get thrown into a losing game and dont feel like turning on the sweat beast mode to try and carry a bunch of morons.

5.) I get the same shitty map 3rd time in a row and i am just not feeling it.

On 1-3 no amount of punishment will change my behaviour and it will only piss me off as a paying customer.

4-5 are fully resolvable on gaijin side and therefore focus should be on that and not punishing me for their garbage systems.

That’s what i thought once 0 penalty.
But then i quit 3x matches in a row, to prove there’s was no penalty, in a post once, before it was deleted, only to loose 3 points during the next hour.

I don’t quit matches otherwise.

On to other points

Now some have pointed out that RL, can get in way, or a DC here and there, but that’s not the issue, and that’s not the reason people are giving for leaving a game.

As some have mentioned, and i do agree, its on gaijin/DF, for not giving people options, ie to pick maps, remove unwanted maps that no one likes,
And also there Fracked up MM, which sticks one side full of real people against the one or two real on other side.

And they don’t want to carry new players, or play with bots with 2-3 real players against a team full of real players, so they leave, or they decide everyone is below them, or are bots
Again on Gaijin in the first place, for having a system that pits a new player against a lvl 39,

It is like WT with out BR, and no new player should have to play against people that have years in front of them, game wise.

But i bet you anything, this new BR wont work, still be people leaving, as if all worked the way people are expecting from the new BR, they will be face with 10 v 10 real people, you will still have people leaving due to its too sweaty, it will be toxic. etc etc etc

I think most just enjoy killing bots, and having a 20-1 K/D ratio, padding there ranks and that’s fun to them, so when there’s a chance they may loose the game, they just leave till they find a bot game.

i have a horrible idea! when a team have fewer player, the bots get better reaction time and accuracy. the buff scales with percentage of player between team :melting_face:

now there’s an incentive for player to not dogpile into one faction, because otherwise they’ll start fighting against aimbots supreme :laughing:

While I understand the POV of both sides, after hearing the arguments over the months I still lean toward the STAY side. As it stands, the desertion trend can’t continue if we want a healthy game state.

I get it, you don’t want to play this map/mode (I generally leave any train or destruction map) or feel the need to carry but equally, how can a match be fun or fair if people leave at the smallest inconvenience?

There need to be changes made to incentivize staying in a match and a change in how punishments are handled.

  • Remove Victory XP Bonus, increase the effect of XP earnings from post-game medals. So carrying even in a losing match can still feel rewarding.
  • Make XP Boosters only be consumed after a Victory in order to reduce the frustration of a lost match and feeling like it was wasted. (Use-by timer stays the same)
  • Maintain/Increase Rank demotion from desertions. Improve end-of-season rewards to be more than just a few portraits so people actually have a reason to increase their player rating and go for a Marshall rating.
  • Only forfeit any and all XP earned from the match being deserted. I am not a fan of taking XP from matches you’ve already completed but there’s no reason you should get rewards from a match that you deserted from, which I think is a fair compromise.
  • Introduce a ban system. 1 map and/or mode you can avoid within your queue. Add small XP bonuses to those who don’t select map/gamemode bans (since adding more filters puts a strain on matchmaking)

Hopefully, once the new matchmaking gets added it will help the team balance a lot more than the current state of things.

if team can ruin fun for me by playing stupidly with camping and not building rally points, then i can also quit and ruin game for them. i find it fair.
and making me play unfun maps/modes is insta quit for me.

Why should I—or anyone else, for that matter—be penalized for wanting to enjoy ourselves while playing this game? Stop forcing us onto maps (or modes) we don’t want to play! Let us choose which maps & which modes we want to play.

There’s your solution!

… along with a logical punishment: If the developers refuse to fix the game to PREVENT desertion, then it’s the developers who should be punished—not the players. It’s the developers who have control over this matter, thus it should be their responsibility to receive punishment.

Therefore, every player is allowed one desertion for every 2 hours of game play. If they desert more than that, that means they’re unhappy with the game—which is the developers fault. So… ALL unhappy players should receive 100 gold deposited into his or her account for each game deserted until this unhappiness is resolved.

How’s that for punishment?

Another desertion complain thread while not addressing the reasons why people desert in the first place. Who wants to play with shit teammates all the time because the faction is not the trending on? Masochists maybe but not me especially with certain game mechanics encouraging toxic behavior such the ranking system and BP or event missions asking for wins.

You don’t get a single point for being a hero on the losing team and staying to the point that its just a waste of time when grinding for rank besides not getting the amount of xp the one who carried on the losing team deserve where its just like a thankless job where nobody thank you for such an act.

Removing the victory bonus removes the incentive to win. Players will simply farm personal score. Very bad idea, unles you want both teams camping and farming.

I do quit a lot, especially when I am in mood of using tanks and slots are already blocked at the start of the game. Then 2) if my team is full of clueless newcomers/bots.

I think part of the motivation for leaving, and I am guessing hear as I personally don’t ever leave unless it’s for some kind of technical reason, is some folks simply equate fun with wining, and if their not going to they leave.

Personally I equate losing to quitting, but we cant hope to reprogram those that look at that like some kind of alien concept.

So no mater what a certain % of the player base will always leave if they feal their going to lose, and providing a carrot big enough to induce them to satay would maybe be bad in another way…

I would think that some “Prize” for not quitting in the face of insurmountable odds might be worth rewarding, in some small way.

It’s less that winning is fun and more that having no chance to win is not fun. There’s no point in staying if you know you are just going to get smacked around for 15 minutes and get nothing for it.

This is always how it is on defense.
Giving defense crucial mechanics could help solve this significantly.

  • Let defenders know where all future objectives will be located.
  • Give time between objectives that attackers cannot push forward (but no ticket loss during this period).
  • Give Engineer Squads a stronger version of defensive structures.

That would help against desertion based on defense games, however, there are also instances where its a map that isn’t well liked, or even a mode. In these cases, developers should be looking at the causes of why and adjust accordingly.

In the event where players are just quitting out constantly, I agree, there needs to be some kind of penalty. Perhaps a score reduction on games moving forward or even a suspension from multiplayer. Though I think the core reasons need to be addressed first.

  1. understandable and having one free quit of punishment daily or every “x” amount of hrs could help for these times

  2. understandable can’t blame someone for life or technical issue, the game should give players some chances with this, someone suggested one quit every 2 hrs free of punishment, other ways to be explored

This one you have to pay the price like everybody else, otherwise you should not play an online game that includes coop, which means you going to get bad team mates, we all hate it, but if we all quit all the time this happens, I would probably quit 75% of my matches, and at that point, why am I even playing anymore? Should probably play something else

The map choice has to be given to the individuals, I agree, but then we will have the braindead mobs choose crap maps, like in the past with bf3, they all played metro and killed the game, so dumb and loses players that like other maps. But if those maps still work with bots, might still work ok, if they do it right. Also currently you have a lot of choice to change campaigns to get other maps, in the future those choices will be removed, which is bad, more reason for devs to give us map choice with update

So basically on 1-3 you should get some waivers to protect you from real life situations, technical issues and a couple of good will quits

4-5 True, however there are more severe reasons for why players leave, and those are player driven toxic spoiled rotten behaviors, nothing you or I can do about it, but there is something the devs can do to punish those players while not punishing you for the legitimate reasons

we want to reduce the abuse basically, as that is what’s hurting the game, it’s similar to using glitches and exploits, as people just fast cycle matches by quitting to find their ideal situation to farm or win and be top of the ladder

Here’s this guy again banding with the other anti-desertion players when some people like myself already asking for better ways to make people stay in a losing match like better rewards for battle heroes of the losing team, adding bonuses to not so popular factions besides the join any team bonus and better xp rewards for modes like conquest.

Reduce abuse? People will find other ways to abuse anyway since honor is just optional in this game and we are just going to get a different kind of abuse like some other toxic tactics like WP/Molotov/Flamethrower/mine spam or much worse. Learned this the hard way in War Thunder where there’s always going to be people play dirty so I play dirty as well as long as its not illegal like cheats and hacks.

Give us better reasons to stay with bad teams or we will just desert and introducing much harsher punishments will just kill the motivation to play the game at all.

Reasons for desertion

Until the developers put together a survey asking people why they quit, this is nothing more than guesswork. I know why I quit sometimes, but it could be completely different for somebody else. Until we know the reasons for this issue, viable solutions are not possible.

I’m sure we players can come up with viable solutions along with the developers if they’re willing to share information with us and solve the problem together. But harsher punishments are not the answer.
