Better ai commands

I think the ai need a little more commands like hold your fire, fire at will, charge, and possibly retreat. Also I think they should have more formations to better there performance and when used properly with the other commands can make them a force that shouldn’t be reckoned with.

Could be hard with some of those.

I would like to see commands like “Get down” to force prone them. Or just “Prone, Crouch, Stand”

Other things I’d like to see is pathing with trenches so they at least jump into the trench before jumping out. An attack command which maybe changes behaviors when attacking a point versus the Generic defend this point would be nice.

I don’t think Hold fire, fire at will or charge have any place though. I mean it’s a battle so maybe leave hold fire specifically for sniper squads who may need more stealth. Otherwise it has no doctrine backing it up. Same for Fire at will. And charge is far too vague of a command for any soldier trained after the first world war to obey.

Or jump in if you are in it. Maybe you don’t want them to go in, after all.

Either works for me. I’d rather them at least fall in instead of jumping straight over then jumping out if you aren’t in it. Think
If: Terrain=Trench and movement=cross trench
Then: Enter trench and leave trench.

If: Terrain=Trench and Player=in Trench
Then: Enter Trench

I don’t know exactly how it would work but basic AI terms there to get the idea across.

I would like to see indicator, where AI shots. Similar to current spotting system.
Sometimes it’s confusing.
In terms of formations, a line would be a good start. Of course with some freedom of movement to seek cover, it’s not line infantry combat.

This is a good idea. Many times i had the need to make them Crawl, duck or hold the exact same position they currently are.

I hate when they go full bunny in trenches popoing over and over.
I totally dislike when they have pefect cover on a window but they just stand exposing 2/3 of the body instead of a 1/3
Sometime i would like to “sneak up” on the Capture Point using tall grass or vegetation, but many times the just stand/run like crazy, like “sensing” “hearing” fire arround they “panic”.

I remember Company of Heroes, the british army had a “stance” on enemy territory or the old game on PS1 called “Army man 3D” had simple orders to command platoon. Translated to Enlisted. It might be a posibility to gave them generals orders for behavior and direct simple order of action.

  • Order of behavior:

On Defense
They will just peak, pike players pressing E and Q from windows, doors and corners.
They will hold position proning/crouching and spreading tanking diferents windows/entrances
They will “poke” trenches and never fully stand. Maybe just one of them will do it and not all of them.
They will be firing back more often and taking cover than repositioning or running.
They will drop over a granade to reduce blast explosion in order to save their buddys
They will trow back granades out of building disregarding if theres an enemy outside or not (just get it out hans!!"

On Offence
They will Sprint untill Tired
They will rather keep runing than shooting back
They will hipfire/quickfire
They will be less likely to Aim Down Sight if the enemy is at close range
They will charge aim/shoot back more often just enemy towards moving order / capture point order
They will honor their name using their granades onto a general position, disregarding enemy presence or exact location. (I hate to lose a soldier with many nades on him)

On Reactive Behavior:

They choose whats best unless an order of behavior is given. (Based on player general order of relocation - in example If i say “cap CP” they will go on offence.

  • Orders of action

Hold Position
Crouch
Crawl
Hold Fire (even while taking damage, its on player if the entire platoon gets oofed with no fire back)
Fire at Will
Volley Fire (They will fire when you do, almost same time)
Snipe target (Sniper or long range weapon will try to take an MG or similar) This order can be given individually - A problem with snipers is that i want them far and attacking a key defensive position, think it like “Quiet” on Metal Gear V behavior.
Heal The Squad
Check Ammo/Ressuply Squad (Toss ammo that one soldier might spare to another with no reload) No need to pass ammo with a “hug close like” animation necesary.

I might be usefull to command engeneers to “close” a gap like Raiwbow Six.
A command to set emplacements, specially ammo!

P.S Sorry for poor ENG, im not a native eng speaker.

Not an issue sir / sirette, it’s completely understandable

Looking forward on your opinnion. You seem to be really into giving useful feedback and opinions!

Reading over it and so far it looks nice, but I am not sure how easy it would be for the devs to implement. They seemed to struggle enough to make AI take distance into account in their targeting speed

ah lovely.

i like when people talk about improvements about bot, insthead of posting thins like " remove them " or stuff like that.

but back to us, i ineed think we could use better ai commands.

if you don’t mind, i would love to get into deeper.

hold your fire, i think it could be dangerous.

so perhaps, a hold fire until fired upon?

so they do not intentionally fire unless they take shot at.

otherwise as i said before, it would be dangerous if they get shot and you dont have a clear visual. or if you get killed and you were near your squad, it would take vital seconds for you to switch, and dismantle your order.

so, that’s why i’m thinking more for a hold fire until fired upon. sort of thingy.

fire at will, isn’t what they arleady do?

fire at everything that they see.

or perhaps you were meaning an precise order that if you look at the enemy on an elevated position, you tell them to fire at that guy while you clear the lower level?

perhaps. just ideas.

retreat order… this one is a bit complex ( in my mind )

i was thinking, perhaps a move to order that can be assigned from the minimap?

although, it’s hard to give them behaviors. as there are different occasions. maybe a behavior selector could work?

another order that i had in mind, was patroll.

usefull when inside big buildings or defending capture points.

the main idea would be that they walk watching possible at 360, and when they dectect forces, they go at windows, take cover, and start shooting at the enemy forces appreaching that said point.

haha totally get you.

i totally like this.
and should be a thing.

this one, if i have to be honest, i don’t like it for a few reasons.

the first one, being that if they keep sprinting until the are tired, they will have no stamina left. and being in an open field without having your squad to keep running rather than shooting back, it’s not ideal at all.

hipfire, quickfire.
they don’t do hipfire, but they quickfire at people quite fast.

having the AI to use grenades it’s not a wise idea either.

i mean, only if they are 100% sure. because most of the time, you as a player needs grenades.

otherwise it would become a grenade spam noon stop.

i like all of them. exept the hold fire. as i stated at the top ^^.

but, matters of opinions.

i just figured out that this is present.

if you are an engy, and position a building, your AI will keep building that. very usefull.

don’t worry, it’s the message that matters the most ^^

It was discussed earlier. If I remember correctly it ended up with fat “no”.

Actually, in the past any ideas of orders changing behaviour of AI were quite quickly negated. I may be mistaken about that but I don’t think so.

it would require a button or an entire section in the wheel.

Yes, but that’s not what I mean.
Actually I posted few ideas of extended command system myself, that’s the most recent one: RTS-ish way of commanding your squad

i just want to add to the many good ideas only one regarding options for reactive fire stance that can be preset in the options menu, not during battle (some of them may be changeable during battle depending on user interface abilities and usability):
Minimum distance: the distance at which the squad opens fire independently of the fact that it is shot upon or not.
Minimum hit chance when reacting: the minimum aggregated probability to inflict considerable damage when reacting to fire. This means that the squad will not return fire if the probability inflict damage is below this threshold. This should avoid the exploit of the enemy firing randomly at cover in order to trigger AI squads to fire back and give away their position.
Default position: standing/kneeling/prone
Return fire maximum position: standing/kneeling/prone

another game i thought of is hidden&dangerous 2 or so.

I mean hold your fire isn’t a bad thing. Honestly I would love for my soldiers to stop trying to shoot targets so far away. If I could get them to hold there fire, so they can actually follow me it would be great. There have been so many times where they straggle behind because they are trying to open fire. Holding fire would at least have them keep up with you. AI is useless if they can’t follow you properly. All I do is tell them to go to a point, and that’s it. no real use for them right now besides being body bags to be shot. They just stand around far behind you aiming at people across the map, and drawing attention when you’re trying to flank.
