Balancing Air Field (Invasion) - Normandy

I feel like the map is heavily allied-sided. Usually when spawning in as german you try to make your way to the objective or a defensive position and get shot at from 3 to 5 directions simultanously. The giant open field also heavily favors american tanks, especially the jumbo. I’ve had times where I lost 2-3 tanks to the very same Jumbo just standing anywhere. Even when trying to flank. All this already favors the US side.
Then there is the insane troop refund for capturing points. Sometimes My team managed to get down the attacking troops to 500 reserve before losing a second capture point, only to see themselves against 700 reserve at a terrible defensive structure and 800 enemmy reserve at the last capture point.

Imo the troop refund is way too high on this map, considering the americans already have the advantage.
And the planes on the airfield are just useless. Trying to get in means you a) run across an open field, b) leave behind your squad to get a (probably) shitty plane, c) even if you get in, starting takes so long, that anyone with a grenade or tank can stop you easily before takeoff, d) once 2 or 3 planes are destroyed it becomes impossible to take off.

TL;DR: Allies hard overpowered, should get way less reserve refund upon capturing points. Planes on the airfield are a joke.

The mix of allied bombers and jumbos makes this map horrible to play as the axis on unless you get a veteran axis team. The jumbo can sit on the runway and is hard as hell to counter without bombers and the constant bombing destroys every spawn you build. I’m a max allied player and currently at level 12 for axis and hate defending on this map

Yea say this to the poor merican with ptsd of gerry barricade in the hangar with flametrower the only unfair things are the matchmatching wo force virgin pzII figth chad jumbo or in more semplicity early player figth veteran ecpecially on normandy over gerry are more inexpirienced of merican

It’s my favorite map on normandy so far. And I play as axis.

By the end of the day Its 50/50 on win ratio.
But
If I was on alied side I would spawn a plane just to destroy balloons… They indeed have too many tickets on the last point.

On the Allied side of equation, as an Allied main, I’ve got about a 50% W/L ratio on Airfield. Most of the time with a loss, allies get wiped on the first objective, or get stopped at the third, fifth, or last objectives.

On the first objective, if Axis can prevent allies from setting down flanking respawn beacons, it’s trivially easy for them to hold the point, so long as allies don’t get tank superiority (which largely depends on how many bombers Axis have, and if Allies have a Jumbo or not.)

On the third, it’s much the same story as the first, but Axis tanks are even more powerful here, as well as anyone with an MG42 or MG nest, due to the large open space between Allied spawns and the objective.

On the Fifth, Axis artillery calls and mortars can easily lock down attempts to take the bunker, flame troopers and assaulters are easily able to hold the interior while the artillery / mortars wipe the lemming trains.

Finally, the final objective, due to the size of the cap, is quite easy to defend so long as Axis players spread out around the objective area, and again, are mindful of the cabins to the side to catch any allied respawn beacons.

Loads of interesting perspectives here. I don’t usually play allied powers, so didn’t know about that. In that case it really seems to be a matchmaking issue. Fighting a Jumbo with Pz. III and the Puma is quite common on the teams I get. (Got lvl 11 on this campaign)
Also I really dislike the german Breda and never see anyone have a MG 34 or 42. Probably will get better with higher level on my end.

Also a question for yall: how does the game determine the refunded reserve units upon capturing a point? Is it a fixed number? Is it calculated by the losses in a set time frame (let’s say last 2 minutes)? Is it calculated by the attackers’ kills and stuff?

Yeah no

It really does come down to equipment. If you fight the US and they have Jumbos and P47s and all you have is pumas its incredibly hard to stop them. I find more new German players than US and I think it results in most of the losses for Germany.

Yeah, this is the main issue, I’d assume. But it affects Allies just as badly, if you’re unlucky on the matchmaker, if not worse, given the Panzer 3N is far better on Airfield than the M8 Scott. (well, in any case, it tends to be way better in general)

Just going to add this here since its pretty much the same topic…
Airfield is a ridiculous unfair map for Axis - English speaking section / Suggestions - Enlisted
Most people over there think its either balanced or Axis favored.

That being said, to actually balance the map and make it more enjoyable.

  1. The airfield should be loaded with blast craters from shells so that way flanking across it will actually work.
  2. Barrage balloons should be made tougher to bring down. In my opinion it should take several dozen rounds to bring them down from a 50 cal mg. The ground forces should have to go up to the winch that holds said barrage balloons and let them float free to “destroy” them. This would still give the allies rewards, but increase the time required to complete it.

I only play allied - I’ve only ever won this map once - 2 losses have been on the last objective, but probably a plurality on the 1st.

Building flank spawn points should help - but canny Axis players can destroy them pretty easily against a poor allied team.

Basically - the allies have to have all their shirts together to win - the axis just needs to be fairly ordinary.

Yeah, most of my losses on airfield as Allies have been from the 1st objective, either directly or indirectly (where we’ll capture the first objective, but only have a couple hundred respawns left after that, and/or have a failbail from people leaving)

Every time I’ve lost as Allied it has been because we’ve ever ran up against an amazing team or I’ve been on an absolute half-brain dead team.

I’ve never came away from a loss on Allied feeling it was a balanced good game on this map. I regularly feel that way on other maps though.

Since the Airfield added into the game, the Covvellie or Coville Farm…(name is not correct) is not drops for me…Le Bre, D-Day etc. happens as usual, but 65-70% of maps is Airfield? why? Devs wanted to do everything on Airfield? I hate it

Main issue I come across on airfield is that 2/3 of the allied team can initially spawn at the other side of the runway. If that happends they will have to cross flat open ground towards the point. They will all die and be demoralised, reducing the chance of winning the map severely.

Other than that, it is the map that needs the most think work to win as the US. All other maps are straight forward and you can win by sheer force of will. Airfield you need certain things before you can deploy said force of will. I think its my favorite map atm on US side.
