An interesting idea for Moscow. Ski troops!

probably the only norwegian on the forum here to tell you some fun facts about skiing

while traversing flat terrain you will need ski poles and therefore you will not be able to fire until you drop them and draw your rifle.
while going down hill you could in theory pull out a gun and fire. however. by the time you manage to draw the gun you are likely already at the bottom of the hill. and even if the hill is long enough, you will still be lucky to hit anything at all. especially if you are an inexperienced german recruit.
there is a reason that (as you see in @gastanofrizzi 's picture) they usually let go of the poles, drop to the ground and fire from prone

they would be great to travel long distances where you dont need to be ready to shoot people. but at the current state of the game, there are no maps large enough for it to be an advantage over just running with your rifle in hand

If we do get a winter war/continuation war campaign, though, it would be cool if they add the Lahti L-39 AT rifle, complete with accurately modelled recoil so you can slide backwards when you shoot XD

Hopefully instead we get Lapland war where Finns are fighting againt germany in northern finland.

They would be used only for some maps. The best of course would be fortified district, fully covered, lots of hills to slide down and lots of flanking routes that take up a lot of time on foot. Like for example the flank around the forest on the attacker side 2nd obj. Or the last onj when attacking you can flank on the far left where you wont even be seen. So yes skis would be situational but still useful in some spots. Like some of the other classes like flamethrowers, only really usefull for certain objectives. When i was writing the post i mainly had fortified district and vysokovo in mind. So try to implement skis on those maps. But that requires a lot of map knowlage so people who maxed out moscow like me you can also point out some usefull flanks and such.

Winter war, Finn vs Soviets.

Whats your point? I really dont get it. “People wouldnt use basically assaulters that have better mobility tools”. If some people dont like them fine. But this would add a bigger playground and make moscow unique. And they were used extensively so theres no reason not to add them. If people dont want to use them then they can not use them but plenty of people would.

Sorry that i didn’t make this clear lol. I meant you can fire your guns when you go down hill and after generating sufficient speed. My apolagies

while this is true with rifle, it was done with kp31. Especiatly with long range patrol squads, always kept the kp31 under right / left arm when moving towards enemy location / generally moved at enemy area where enemy was expected.

Like the guy at right side. Shooting while on skis did happen especiatly with long range patrol squads.
And was done / used to some extend at raatteentie motti.

How effective it was is another thing, but still taught to this day.

We want motorcycles too in other campaings! Theyre a faster mode of travel for assaulters basically that has an MG. Yes ski troops may be usseles for a lot of maps that have no snow, but i kinda wrote the post when i was only thinking about fortified district, where the map is HUGE, has plenty of snow, hills you can generate speed from, plenty of flanking routes.

And shooting from when you generate enough speed would be great, like when you go down a hill or been skiing for long enough

I would love a winter war campaing so much! Or a continuation war. That would be epic but for some reason i doubt theyll do it sadly

what to understand I was clear, for Moscow this idea is useless, for a future winter war yes

although having the kp31 strapped like this would make it faster to draw. i would imageine they would still need to come to a complete stop before being able to use it effectively on flat terrain.

if you are chasing someone down a very long hill (as @115438023 stated), you might have the motor skills to hipfire the kp31 somewhat accurately while also not crashing in a tree. but it would be rather difficult, and you would not be able to properely aim or reload.
you also have to consider that usually you are going really fucking fast down hill on skis, and a slight imbalance (like aiming your gun) can send you tumbling into a rock. if you are not very skilled

however it is important to remeber that these hills dont exist in game

Neither snow physics

It was usually the pointman that had gun ready on patrols sking on 1 pole and gun ready on another.
Definitely less accurated than aimed shots but for pointman opening / returning fire was question of life or death.

Agree and for that time frame the skis was rather usual way of moving from a to b even during peace time so fairly few finn lacked the skills needed to ski. Also Lauri Törni did chase down some soviets hipfiring on skis on frozen lake so its not exactly a impossible task, effectiveness is definitely another thing.

Well id argue aiming thru sights is something that id rate near impossible, hipfiring is entirely another thing.

Yeah, perhaps at somepoint they would find a sweetspot without RNG how effective or not effective it should be.

But its not useless, for you maybe but myself and others can imagine some great spots to quickly flank and attack.

i think we actually agree on this.
i am arguing that you could do it if you are skilled. but most people couldnt. the great finnish people are legends, i am referring to the avarage german soldier and poor russian conscripts here. and that you would most likely be better off dropping to the floor and taking aim

(but i still think they dont quite fit the small maps currently in game)

and this is true ^^. didnt consider it at the moment i wrote the comment

No idea how well germans did on skis, probably not too well. What comes to soviets during winter war fair share of them didnt know how to ski and had to be taught the very basics. Worth mentioning fact is that soviet army had ordered shir ton of skis and miraculously acquired them. They just were wrong type “sporting” skis that were little to none help in wilderness where was 0 prepared ski tracks.

Siberian conscripts with proper equipment were respected by finns tho.

I don’t see them with maps that aren’t even a kilometer big, maybe you should take a better look at the maps, as I already told you it’s useless for moscow maybe you don’t know but the campaigns will only have 40 levels for the beta and we are already at 32 therefore for moscow it is useless but for a future winter war it is a good idea

The t26 is dragging around a Maxim mg on a sled on the picture. I really, REALLY want the Maxim in game. I’d rather have that than the mg42 on sandbags, even if it’s less practical. Could allow longer prolonged fire to compensate? I want it…

I’ve got a special place in my heart for this weapon. Many here prefer the iconic mg42… I cannot explain why for me it’s the Maxim.
