Is this one of those war thunder things that im not aware of? like the T34-85 basically one shot kills 90% of the time, while the Pz IV struggles to even deal any dmg.
These vehicles would both knock each other out, first shot.
Both Tanks were comparable to each other.
They really weren’t 1:1 comparable, and the T-34-85’s are closer to the Panther’s in performance than the PZIV both in game and in realistic aspects.
It doesn’t help that they gave us the Panzer IVJ, with it’s slow turret drive. The IVH would still be nominally inferior against the T-34-85’s, but could at least better deal with infantry than the J.
okay, so both could penetrate each other basically everywhere, what makes the T34-85 better then? I dont see how you even consider this not being obvious…
Right, give me a minute to dig up the comparison, but yes.
T-34-85 UFP Effective thickness: 85mm

T-34-85 Max Speed: 33mph

Panther most common enemy tank: T-34-85
Also, from the other Gaijin game we see these tanks, the Panzer IVJ is BR 4.0 in Warthunder, vs the T-34-85 D-5T’s BR of 5.3. The T-34-85 D-5T is more than a full battle ranking above the IVJ in that game, e.g. is considered too much more powerful than it to ever face it under normal circumstances in Warthunder. The T-34-85 with the ZisS-S-53 meanwhile is at 5.7. Compare to the Panther D at 5.3, Panther A at 5.7, and Panther G at 6.0.
So yes, the T-34-85’s and Panthers are closer in performance to one another than either is to a Panzer IV.
literally non of that matters, if it pens, its done in 90% of the cases, thats how tank warfare worked back in the day.
Does it pen is the first question you’ll have to answer,
reliability, engine power, rate of fire, all come next.
I have never been a huge fan of war thunder, pure tank vs tank combat seems not to be my type of game, but still, I don’t feel like I would need to check the stats of a different game, when I can just look at history sources directly.
Because a game wherein pure tank-vs-tank gameplay is explored, and from which this game, Enlisted, takes it’s tank damage models and performance values from, seems a reasonable basis to then draw inferences as to how they should perform in Enlisted compared to one another from.
Especially as the ranges we work with in Enlisted are far closer to Warthunder norms than IRL norms, if not even closer ranges than Warthunder norms.
I mean, in the end it wouldn’t matter much, because ppl will unlock better tanks, and the pz IV wont be used in the endgame anymore.
Still, it kinda hurts my ww2 fanboy soul to see something like this, just like the Jumbo in Normandy or 90% of the Wehrmacht using FG42’s, these “little details” are what makes a ww2 game believable in the end.
It would also be worthwhile to add that the PzIV J’s KwK75mmL48 has a penetration factor of 125mm at 500m at a 90 degree angle of obliquity, and 101mm at 30 degrees angle of obliquity.
The engagement ranges in the Fall of Berlin Campaign are generally between 100-200m once you get past all the junk and crap that’s been strewn about the streets.
In the optimal case the PzIV J’s PzGr39 modelled in game should be able to penetrate 137mm and 110mm respectively following on from the above example.
In both cases this is more than enough to drill the T-34-85. The export of this tank from WT has been done in a most biased way. Whilst the PzIV armour protection is completely obsolete to the T-34-85 and they get one shot accordingly, the same should apply to the T-34-85 because the German gun is more than up to it in terms of penetration at the ranges in game.
The T-34-85 is much better angled and so it is a lot easier to ricochet shots off it IF you are hitting the extremities or have a very steep angle > 30 degrees. However, this is also occurring on shots to the centre of the seen mass at less than 30 degrees as well as shots to the turret. This is the old school bias that Gaijin has eventually watered down after years of complaints on the WT forums, and it would seem its crept back in with Enlisted.
Nobody really knows who was the big brain behind putting a Pz IV against a T-34-85. Either full biased or just ignorant of tanks and never actually bothered to test tanks in game
bruh, first putting wiki as a source
Second the PzIII with the long 50mm can pen a T-34 in various places. Should we put that thing maybe there?
Also the equivalent of the T-34-85 was the Panther. They could just put a panther in the place of the PzIV. But this way nobody would have any incentive to whale the premium Panther instead of waiting to unlock the later tech tree one. Lame monetization technique
Being the main battle tanks of the 2 armies? sure…
Other than that the Panther is almost 20 tons heavier - and was an all new design incorporating all the latest refinements as of 1942 whereas the 34/85 was an upgunned 1940 tank that was over-burdened with it’s new gun, armour and extra crewman.
The Panther had better sights and general optics, was more spacious and had a heating system - which is fairly important in European winters!
The Panther outclassed the 34/85 one-on-one - but the 34/85 was far more “cost effective” being significantly cheaper and good enough for the main job of defeating german infantry, and was built in numbers such that it could be everywhere that Panthers were not.
Panzer IV H would have been a better choice than J. J has a turret issue which is from Normandy and its like the slowest tank in game. And can’t aim really well. It’s aim is 3x slower than Panzer IV H.
It’s actually the worst tank in Normandy on Axis, you’ll get flanked very easily. Most German Players actually uses the Panzer III N over the Panzer IV J
Game-wise a T-34-85 can just oneshot a Pz-IV almost whereever it shoots it. Contrary a Pz IV cannot do that. Contrary first cannot one-shot a panther everytime and same the Panther to the T-34-85. Also even irl the T-34-85 was way closer to the Panther than the Pz IV. So having the Pz IV there “against” a PzIV cannot be justified except from either Bias or monetization reason. Personally i think it is the second
