In actuality, I was the CO that most inmates wanted. I was fair to every inmate. Some of the CO’s took joy in writing discipline reports which went in front of an ALJ (administrative law judge), and if found guilty that inmate would have time added to their sentence. Sure, I could have found reasons to write women up, but why if you can correct the situation easily.
A few times I came in and the yard had closed, so I always looked at the sign in/out sheet to make sure everyone was home. I had saw an inmate was signed out to the yard, but the yard had closed over an hour ago, so I would go to the inmate room and ask if inmate so and so is here. She would answer yes, why? And I would ask how she could she be here if the sheet said she was in the yard? The inmate looked horrified as she thought I would write her up, but I always sat the sheet down with a pen on it and step out the door. A few seconds I would return and look at the sheet and tell them, “I’m sorry, I must have made a mistake”. They would laugh, say thank with a huge relieved look and that would be it. In three years I only wrote three discipline reports. One was when I was in training and found an inmate had to many pencils, I had to write that one because the Captain was my teacher, and once an inmate called me an asshole, TWICE. I just replied, thank you Miss Robinson, and wrote her ass up. Two weeks later after going to the ALJ, she showed up at my desk reading a written apology, which I knew was complete BS and ordered by the ALJ. But, I said thank you I really appreciated her sincere apology, and as she was walking out I said “and you didn’t mean a word of it did you”? I just got a dirty look in return, but she got two weeks added to her sentence for it.
So, I was far from a drill sgt. But I was hard on them if I needed, they just didn’t give me a lot reason to be. Some CO’s, yeah, they were a huge issue for, but those CO’s were the Barney Fife types who get a badge and their chest swelled and they looked for trouble. Sorry, my ADHD has me rambling again.
A little trolling, to boost morale. You had a good time, mister
It’s quite humane, I think, if you follow the instructions, then there would be a lot more such reports, a single digit number.
Well, everything is fair here, in theory, I do not know how strict the detention regime was. As far as I know, in other countries, if desired, CO can be sent to the punishment cell for 2 weeks) And that would be clearly worse than just extending the prison term.)
I think the army experience that probably came before working with was clearly useful to get what you require.
Yes, power is a temptation that not all people pass. I watched with my own eyes as a nobody wearing a uniform transformed into something formidable. After all, JRRT correctly described the concept of the ring of power
Come on, I just went out for a smoke and laughed heartily with a story about your experience as a supervisor. The mood is like someone you know is telling good, heartfelt stories. It is a pity that the framework of the forum does not allow mentioning more dirty details and funny moments. Would you like to poison stories on YouTube or start writing an autobiography to distract yourself, with funny jokes and stories I think with such a baggage of professions, there is something to tell how a completely bad car was sold, slightly tinted, as strange buyers came. As prisoners, even the wildest and most terrifying stories were hidden in their cells.
I developed mine because I was trying to brute force stuff while also suffering from severe untreated ADHD
It got pretty old when most of the professionals insisted on “treating” (more like supressing or managing) the depression while also never never willing to actually look for any underlying causes…while I was quite literally describing severe inattentive ADHD symptoms day in day out
