Thinking about Japanese tanks; the lack of commander position and the machine gun being not operated by the gunner means that a lot of times, the machine simply sits idle until the tank is destroyed.
Not only are the guns not being used, but infantry can stroll right up to a tank right in front of a manned machine gun and unless the player HAPPENS to be controlling it, not get shot at.
It seems, to me, to have a simple solution. We have AI gunners on CAS, why should tank machine gunners not be able to operate their weapons? Simply let tankers a position marked “machine gunner” operate the weapon without being controlled by the player.
Will this lead to the T28 being an absolute terror? Most likely, but tanks need some love, and this seems a relatively simple thing to implement, in my admittedly ill-informed opinion.
Edit: it also, might cause issues with controlling the guns from the commander’s position, but at that point, maybe just not have the commander directly control the machine guns.
As long as they will have cap on the shooting range of max 50-60m they will be fine and it’s not like bots have good tracking so they will be missing most of the time against moving targets. Such limit also could encourage people to move closer to the battlefield if they want some kills done by the bot.
This doesn’t really matter in game.
Moreover, tanks from other nations literally have co axial mg. I don’t see the problem of giving Japan tank such ability to substitute the coaxial mg.
It’s a lesser problem, but I regularly run up to Sherman’s right in front of their hull machine gun. The problem is just most noticeable for Japan.
I may be entirely, 100% wrong on this because this is just a guess on my part, but maybe the MG Gunner just increases the reload speed of the MG’s? And if he doesn’t, he should. But yeah hull MG’s should be functional outside of just the Stuart and M2 Medium (not in Enlisted but all of its MG’s are functional in WT) and it’ll help a bit with sneaky AT Men. I’d definitely be for hull MG’s being independent as well
