Well the French can easily use belt fed :
Hotchkiss Portable MG

So i think they can make similar solution for Japan to look more realistic. Japanese Type 92 heavy machine gun can be belt fed its based on Hotchkiss M1914 after all.

For an instance they had Kawamura-developed belt feed mechanism for Type 99 cannon:

Yes, they had a lot of field modifications of aircraft weapons… A lot! I remember finding photos where an entire platoon was armed with Type 92 or captured AN/M2 machine guns modified as light machine guns.

The reason that they didn’t used belt fed was normally to doctrine Japanese army really didn’t liked wasting ammo. But for a game none of the belt fed machine guns where used for gunning and running like we have in game

Type 3 13 mm fixed aircraft machine gun used used the 13.2x99mm Hotchkiss cartridge that was belt fed.

The other option that comes to mind is to use the Japanese Experimental drums for machine guns. Drum-like box that contains a cloth belt that it was converted to use for Type 3 heavy Machine Gun.
