Romania was originally a neutral country in WW2 but a fascist coup in 1940 ended putting it on the Axis side. In 1941 Romania, alongside all the other Axis powers, invaded the Soviet Union. Romania actually had the 2nd most troops of the Axis fighting on the Eastern Front. In 1942 Romania suffered its worst defeat on the Eastern Front when the Soviets specifically targeted the weaker Axis lines in their massive counter-offensive to encircle Stalingrad. In 1944 as the war began to turn against Germany Romanian King Michael I led a coup against the fascist government and Romania joined the Allies and even fought with the Soviet Union as they pushed into Germany. Ironically the Romanian army was far larger in its war against Germany than it was when it was fighting the Soviets on the Eastern Front
Despite switching sides near the end of the war, a Premium/ event Romanian squad should still be added for the Axis. They spent the majority of the war on Germanyâs side. Itâs no different than how we still have Italian units fighting in Normandy, Hurtgen Forest, and Berlin long after Italy surrendered in 1943. In that instance I justified these units as after Italy surrendered a puppet state, the Italian Social Republic, was founded in Northern Italy and fielded thousands of soldiers, thousands of Italians had chosen to continue to fight with the Axis even after the surrender, and there even was an Italian SS division. A similar justification can be made for Romania as thousands of Romanians volunteered to serve in the German armed forces even before Romania surrendered, and there were some SS divisions as well as a specific SS division made after Romania surrendered
Ideally this squadâs unique weapon would be a return of a classic rifle from the Stalingrad campaign from a long time ago, the Mannlicher M93, Romaniaâs standard rifle. This weapon was removed from the game as an exclusive to those who grinded the Stalingrad campaign. I would highly recommend this squad to be a Riflemen squad. I find the 9-man Riflemen squad is the quintessential representation of infantry.
