What’s truly funny is the stereotype is real.
We don’t realize it up here, but when I visit USA down, often ppl told me “why are you sorry? Why are you saying that for, you did nothing wrong? Wait… you Canadian by any chance?”

I think you guys inherited it from us Brits. We’re the kind of people to apologise to our own reflection in a mirror, or a statue that we might bump into. 
My missus is notorious for apologising for, well, pretty much anything. I’m less sorry for things, so it drives me mad sometimes. lol.

Not really. Mostly a symbol, and a face to put of dollars.
It was in 1867, Canada gained independence from Great Britain. Canada was self-governed but technically continued under the British rule till 1931.
To make it symbolic even more it’s why Canada did not declare war on Germany the same day as England did, but a few days later
