List of the real war-heroes presented ingame!

Hello comrades!
As a ww2 enthusiast i reserched a lot in russian ancestorypages in the internet and found out that these unique soldiers represent real award winning warheroes of their nation (with just slightly different names). The soldiers also fit in their timeperiod, like Vasily Barankov (Real life: Vasily Baranov who died in 1945 as a tanker in Berlin, awarded hero of the soviet union) is also a tanker in Berlin.

I wanted to create a list of these real soldiers with their ingame names, because i am really interested in such details including my own research (which i already added in the list)

List of the unique soldiers in real life:

Petr Likhanov - represents “Pjotr Laktionov”
Vasiliy Barankov - represents “Vasily Baranov”
Maxim Merkulin - ?
Vasiliy Arkhilov - represents “Vasily Arkhipov”
Pavel Golichinkov - represents “Pavel Golovachov” (most likely)
Denis Dotsenko - represents “Dmitriy Dotsenko” (closest one, also an anti tank unit, died in berlin)
Victor Miganov - represents “Victor Mironov” (most likely)

USA:

Frank Penegory - represents “Frank Peregory”

Feel free to comment some of the soldiers names you know which are missing and i will add them :slight_smile: To find them is very difficult because those are some of the “unknown” heroes of ww2, not famous ones like Vasily Saizev as an example.

I bough Moscow Karl Kotz assaulter a while ago and did a similar research but never found an exact name… You saying they deliberately switched 1 or 2 letters make a lot more sense, so I found this:

He lost alot of ranks to go from general to assaulter :sweat_smile:

Thank you for sharing this project ! I think it’s really cool the devs do this and I would personally like to see a blog or forum post from them one day explaining their research and choices. Not criticizing, I just also love history and honoring men braver than I .

Fritz Bliesner is our Felix Bliesner ingame (at least thats what I guess due their names)
(DOB: 24.01.20 in Stettin). (R). Beginning of 1940 Lt., trf to 5./KG 55. 1822.06.41

They spelled Walter’s name wrong its Ehlers not Ehmers Although I think they might have done that to avoid a lawsuit for using Walter’s likeness

Military service[edit]

Ehlers joined the United States Army from the city of Manhattan, Kansas, in October 1940.[3] He and his older brother Roland served in the same unit and participated in the fighting in North Africa and Sicily.[4]

By D-Day on June 6, 1944, Ehlers was a staff sergeant and squad leader in the 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. His squad, part of the invasion’s second wave, waited off shore in a Landing Craft, Infantry, while the first group of soldiers landed. When the first wave became pinned down on the beach, his unit was transferred to a Higgins boat and sent forward early to assist. They fought their way off the beach and by June 9 were near the town of Goville, 8 miles (13 km) inland.[4] On that day, he led his unit’s attack against German forces and single-handedly defeated several enemy machine gun nests. The next day the platoon came under heavy fire. Ehlers was wounded, but managed to cover the platoon’s withdrawal; this included carrying a wounded automatic rifleman to safety and running back through enemy fire to retrieve his Browning Automatic Rifle. After treatment of his wounds, Ehlers refused to be evacuated and continued to lead his squad.[5] For his actions he was awarded the Medal of Honor five months later, on 11 December 1944. He was decorated in Paris in the office of Lieutenant General John C. H. Lee, Commanding General, Communications Zone, ETO. By this time Ehlers had received a battlefield commission to second lieutenant.

On July 14, more than a month after D-Day, Ehlers learned that his brother Roland had died at Omaha Beach when his landing craft was struck by a mortar shell.[4]

I’m going to post a link to the US National Archives with enlistment records between 1938 - 1946. Click the third link under Technical Documentation to see the list. Don’t know how much this will help, but I’m going through it, and I’m not sure I want to go through all 300 odd pages right now.

Neil Orenko might be Nicholas Oresko, ( Nicholas Oresko - Wikipedia), although, I am a bit unsure about this one as he wasn’t at Normandy, but arrived with the 94th Division three months after.

They always change the names of these unique soldiers a little bit as you can see in most of the cases and yes youre right, probably they try to avoid lawsuit with it

The only Rolland McCreed I could find was RAF not an America tank commander.

I think I found one in Australia as well, but again, not an American tanker.

This might be necroposting, but I think I may have a lead on Roland McCreed. I found a private with the name R. McCreedy with almost no information about him (for free at least). I’m trying to find more, but almost every piece of information is locked behind a paywall. the initial lead started here:

However, the more I search, the more my gut tells me Darkflow and Gaijin most likely didn’t do this much work, and probably based it off Richard McCreery, a British amour commander although this would be even more of a stretch as A. he’s British, B. he never set foot in Northern France, having been in North Africa and later Italy.
