After seeing some threads about historical accuracy, I was prompted to do some research about weapons in WW2. Where do you find information about weapons & vehicles used in WW2?
All over the place! Google is your friend!
Wikipedia is actually a pretty good place to start for general information, and often the reference links at the bottom of articles provide excellent and in depth technical data.
For specific small arms I highly recommend forgottenweapons.com, and their videos on youtube - again you can search google for “forgotten weapons” + your weapon name and look at what videos pop up.
There really are thousands of places - and if you start with 1 thing you are interested in you will probably find that you will become aware of more and more places of interest.
Mine is books , by reputable authors.
Wiki is good but not always accurate.
There are some sources like Tank Enclopedia (online website). They update it often enough, and fix errors pretty regularly from what I can see.
modernfirearms.net(formerly worldguns.ru) is one of the OG websites about firearms where it’s been around since 1999. The author Maxim Popenker has appeared in some other gun youtubers videos like Forgotten Weapons already.
Wiki gets the basic things such as the equipment right
Yeah there’s some guns you can’t find in wiki and the worst part is some are only in Russian and not english
Books, buy original ww2 manuals, diaries, etc they aren’t even expensive and easy to get online on lots lots of webpages. field manuals and so on.
Museums with original content
Collectors
Web pages.
Original movies from the time.
Have both grand grand fathers serving there.
And most importantly dig for information on multiple sources for your own interest.
Sooner you I’ll become a weirdo like most of us regarding this stuff.
Isn’t bad knowing about something more and more, but gets you a weirder the more you know about something particular, in this case ww2. . Keep this in mind.
Also. Most stuff you read, because A or B stated so online, will be wrong.
Wikipedia isn’t worth your time besides the links on where they got the information from.
Zvezda channel had this series called “Weapons of Victory” about Soviet WWII weapons where there are some youtube channels did add English subtitles on the series
Here’s a sample video. Zvezda which is the source of the video is the Russian MoD’s official channel so they have more access to military stuff, archive footage and the resource people for the subject.
I know one, but it’s in Spanish, you don’t care, do you?
I don’t care. It would be nice if you can share it with us in the forum.
I typically go look for reports in my local university library’s website, its where I get most of my information but I recognize that’s not feasible for everyone. One trick is to go to Wikipedia, and then scroll straight down to the bottom of the page to the citations like stated before. Wikipedia is usually meh at providing historical accuracy, but the sources are usually decent when it comes to historical facts. Just make sure to confirm the reputation of the sources yourself, because sometimes they do cite questionable sources.
