The Battle of Peleliu, which took place from September to November 1944, was one of the bloodiest confrontations between American and Japanese forces in the Pacific during the Second World War.
Located in the Palau Islands, Peleliu was of strategic importance to the Allies because of its airfields. The US Marines met fierce resistance from the Japanese defenders, who were well entrenched in a network of underground bunkers.
Despite repeated assaults and massive casualties, the Marines finally succeeded in capturing the island, but at a high cost in human lives. The Battle of Peleliu illustrated the brutality of fighting in the Pacific and the challenges faced by US forces as they advanced towards Japan.
