On December 10, 1943, the Director of the British Ordnance Department was asked by the Secretary of the Council to conduct tests of a new light submachine gun developed in New Zealand and, if successful, to import this weapon for adoption by the British Army. The product was developed by New Zealander Allen Mitchell and was a submachine gun of traditional design, but as light as possible. In addition to the pistol grip, this weapon was of completely metal construction and weighed about 1.86 kg without cartridges
The ammunition was fed through STEN magazines. The rate of fire was about 700 rounds per minute. Tests showed that the weapon was basically quite good when fired “from the hip”, but overall too light, which resulted in high recoil and, accordingly, poor accuracy. Excessive barrel heating during burst firing and problems with the trigger mechanism were also found. The weapon was returned to New Zealand for modifications, but apparently this was never carried out.
Performance characteristics : cartridge - 9x19 Para, barrel length - 130 mm, weight without cartridges - 1.86 kg, magazine capacity - 32 cartridges, rate of fire - 700 rounds/min.
