I’ve been trying to play the Il-2 plane and it’s honestly just awful.
There’s no way to train the plane. You have no idea what speed or distance you should be dropping bombs because there’s no training ground for it and the game gives you NO information about what’s happening. Generally you’ll spawn, unload rockets and bombs on site, turn around and re-supply. get anywhere between 0-5 kills generally. The bombs radius is extremely small. 5 kills, and it takes about 5-10 minutes to spawn, drop load, and get back. This is AWFUL support for your team. As a trooper I can be killing 10 people in 5 minutes just by being on point, and pushing/defending points. Literally negative value.
Then there’s the fact the plane damage information is completely missing. There’s no sound, or indicator when you’re plan is shot. I’m spending most of my flying time trying to figure out where the hell that random tail or wing damage came from. Planes are EXTREMELY easy to shoot down.
Third problem. You can’t actually land the plane anywhere. You can drop gears, change flaps, but you’re going to crash every time. Whats the point in having a pilot, with ground perks and gear, who DOESN’T HAVE A PARACHUTE. It’s almost impossible to get out of a broken plane. How the hell does a ww2 pilot not have a parachute?
Basically it’s completely useless to play either of the two starting planes. Wait until the second tier of planes comes out for both. Which raises the point, why even have a starter tier to unlock if it’s useless?
Yes, there is. There’s a thud noise and in the bottom right of the screen there’s an indication of damage received. Granted it isn’t very clear, but it does the job in telling you what’s been damaged
Nope, and you’re not going to be able to either.
THE.GAME.IS.IN.BETA,
Parachutes will come eventually.
Stuka B2 is insanely good HS.123 is fine, the Soviet fighter is meh and the IL2 isn’t great.
Sounds to me like a player issue rather than a plane issue.
Well, that is from my experience, I use the Stuka as a dive bomber, so dropping in at a steep angle, whereas the IL2 doesn’t perform well in that method. So, yeah, I find the Stuka insanely good in it’s designed role.
But the rest are ok, I just can’t really get on with the rockets, so I tend to not play the Soviet aircraft.
On top of that, russians have rockets which are pretty much guaranteed kill on tanks. With bombs it’s always hit or miss as even 500kg one can just “bounce” of the tank.
This is untrue, I play with a lot of people over VoIP and they all say the same. I’m not aware I’m being shot nor is there any audio playing until my plane actually receives damage, the only time I know I’m being shot at is if they miss and I can see the tracers. At the moment, this is the only real issue I have with the planes. The audio sometimes plays, sometimes It’s long after I receive damage or no audio queue at all.
It could be desync or server lag as we’ve been dying around corners and reciving shots behind cover more frequently these last few weeks but it was extremely obvious this weekend.
I can assure you it is not untrue, I have it frequently occur when I am flying and become damaged, I also watch many a streamer and the noise it heard on their streams.
Maybe it is being missed in the heat of a battle with multiple people talking, but it is certainly there.
For soviets in Moscow Il-2 is my preferred plane - I’ve upgraded it and it flies a lot better for that investment.
The loadout is pretty good - being able to actually aim rockets is really useful, but it’s bombing is hit or miuss - pardon the pun - since it can’t pull out of a steep doive. I have read accounts that this was a real problem - it’s bombing could never be accurate enough which is why they went to rockets - but at least it carries both. (BTW also whey the western allies went to rockets - bombs were totally inaccurate - they couldn’t ebven get a giood hit % on somethign the size of a paddock from flighter bombers)
SB2 is much worse - can’t even do more than the shallowest of dives (won’t pull out), and so bombs could be anywhere within 1/2 km! Have had some success with it hitting presumed spawn points - but it’s most common score is: - (nothing) - Il-2 will usually get a kill or 2 and also occasionally with guns plus can shoot down a/c.
Pe-3 is rubbish - only has rockets - big rockets but not big enough, and doesn’t have the 20mm cannon it should have if it is hte later model carrrying rockets! Plane would be useful with it’s historical lod of 2 x 250kg and 2 x 100kg bombs.
Basically in Moscow the Soviet CAS is totally outclassed by the German CAS - the planes carry less bombload, and in the 110C the Axis have the best plane in hte game IMO - big bombs, plus forward facing cannon & MG’s.
The IL-2 is also extremely vulnerable to damage, where a rifle caliber shot to the wing occasionally acts more like the wing was struck by a 15 ton sledgehammer due to how it changes the flight model. If it’s not an instant flat spin right there and then, it’s one that happens the next time you want to turn the plane around.
I-153 seems to primarily suffer from an underpowered engine and that it sideslips through the air if it’s not going full speed.
Rocket usage in general is hampered by the difficulty in obtaining targets - stuff renders in too late to the point where you were killed by a tank, know it’s exact location, spawn a plane with intention to go rocket it, know tanks usually don’t veer far off the road on that map and the tank was marked by some infantry while you were already on the air… and you still can’t see it appear on the screen until it’s too late to actually aim at it because it moved 30meters from the point it was originally.
RBS rockets feel GREAT when you hit a tank. But mostly their most effective use for me is rocketing the bunker on Fortified District, as they appear to penetrate that building and it has a big chance of having infantry inside in a small area the blast still reaches.
I’ve unlocked the Yak-1 now and I think in a ground attack role (yes I know it’s a fighter) it’s just superior to I-153 and the IL-2 as well. IL-2 carries more bombs, but the Yak-1 gets to reload them in half the time, can place them more accurately and is less vulnerable to incoming fire. Yak-1 doesn’t feel like you constantly worry about being so slow you’re about to stall.
Well, I find them easier to drop where I intend to, because of the speed the plane has - bombs are going to inherit that speed and so less of the trajectory is decided by gravity (which is harder for me to estimate), as well as the plane feels to fly straighter where I point it at - it doesn’t have rockets, but if it did those would be much better than trying to get the I-153 to go straight so I can shoot the rockets where I aim.
Of course all of the aim issues can be fixed with practice of the I-153 and IL-2 if I’m merely aiming at known “the enemy usually gathers here” points of map. It’s also true that the Yak-1 doesn’t have any easier time spotting things to target directly.
Early ariplanes, just as tanks, are easy to “drive” and learn how to play the game. All early fighters are capable of shooting any attacker. You even get some bombs so you don’t die from boredom.
All early attackers are decent - their bombs might not powerful but you get more of them, so again, makes it easier to learn how to play and where to bomb.
The IL-2 is still very capable, but I feel like the payload change was a nerf, especially next to the buff the Ju-87 got.
It seems like the theme now is that German payloads require no skill anymore.
It’s also a joke that the SB-2 has a payload of 6 100s. It’s the best that Russia gets and yet everything Germany has access to is more effective.
They’re hit or miss, a lot of times they nonpen or bounce even if you get a direct hit.
I would like the IL-2 to stay as-is, but see the Pe-3 and SB-2 buffed while German payloads get a nerf.
I’ve gotten more tank kills with 50kg bombs than I have with rockets because of how unreliable the rockets are. Rockets suck ass.
Meanwhile Germans get nukes that kill tanks if they land in their general vicinity. It takes Germans a lot less effort to kill a tank with bombs than it takes Russia to kill them with rockets.
