Dispersion is currently the biggest factor incentivizing spam of toxic stuff in enlisted. When the only guns that reliably shoot where you aim are bolt actions, you see sniper spam with the only counter being another bolt action. When smg bullets curve around the target you see flamethrowers which have area of effect. When LMGs can’t hold down a choke point or attack route due to flintlock tier accuracy people will either use them like troglodytes and magdump in peoples faces or spam HMGs and tanks. And overall, inefficiency of infantry firearms leads to greater spam of grenades and other explosives.
Bolt action rifles are currently the only guns that reward skill, that skill being good aim. Semi auto rifles should reward both aim and recoil control, LMGs should reward strategic positioning, and SMGs and ARs should reward good movement and playing aggressively. To ensure this, DISPERSION MUST BE CHANGED so that guns reward skill.
I propose that current dispersion values become “maximum dispersion values” with the minimum value for all guns being zero. When you ADS, your dispersion will increase slowly until it reaches the maximum value for your gun. Holding your breath temporarily stops dispersion increase, and mounting locks dispersion at a quarter of its maximum value. Dispersion increases slower when crouched and slowest when prone. Movement makes it increase faster. When not aiming, dispersion will decrease quickly until it reaches zero.
I see people talking about dispersion all the time, but that’s also one of the big reasons to upgrade your weapons is it not?
I use semi-auto rifles a lot, as well as the other stuff, and with them fully maxed I really don’t have any issue unless I’m trying to hit LONG range with them. Even MGs when fully upgraded don’t seem to have much issue.
My question is this:
How many of the weapons that are being complained about have been used in their fully upgraded state, or is the baseline that everyone is talking about the completely stock weapons?
That’s my point though, if the weapon is fully upgraded, the dispersion is very minor at best. Beyond that, there are real life physics that are recreated by adding dispersion to the game.
The longer a barrel is, the more accurate that bullet will be. Despite what some people think, guns do not act like lasers. Especially on weapons that were mass produced like that, barrel imperfections were also pretty common, leading to accuracy loss.
On the human error side of things, holding a firearm perfectly still when shooting doesn’t really happen unless you put in an INSANE amount of practice. Considering you are playing as GRUNTS and not supersoldiers, its unlikely it would be perfectly still.
These kind of things factored in is what makes dispersion have a reason to exist. They may not have perfect accuracy with every single round, but upgrading your weapons, bracing with them, etc will yield much higher accuracy.
It doesn’t change the fact that this is a game, historical accuracy has been proven to be secondary to developers agenda. Dispersion to some level may be realistic but it is not on many guns in Enlisted, such as machine guns. It is also an RNG mechanic which takes agency away from players which is never good as a game mechanic. My suggestion rewards managing time spent aiming and strategic positioning with reduced dispersion.
It is on MGs though. What guns DON’T have dispersion to some degree or another?
Really? Because from what I see your suggestion is asking for the OPPOSITE. It’s asking to reward run-and-gun behavior with higher accuracy. The exact opposite of rewarding strategic positioning.
The more time you would spend moving around, the more fatigued your body would be, meaning HIGHER dispersion.
HISTORICAL ACCURACY isn’t in question here. Actual how-it-works physics and balancing is.
Run-and-gun tactics by themselves are an advantage that can be used tactically. Accuracy is another advantage that can be used tactically. They are separate, because if you had BOTH together, it would be busted OP, and you’d be running around like a super-soldier. In other words, Call of Duty.
This is simply an idea. Movement recovery could be added as well. But I just want the aspect of dispersion to be a factor that the player is more involved with, to create engaging gameplay.
If that’s the case, my best suggestion is to have dispersion based to some degree around stamina. The more of your stamina that is drained, the worse dispersion you have. (It makes sense from a realism standpoint too, as the more fatigued you are, the less steady your aim is.)
In addition, this would help to balance perk builds out a bit more, as stamina regen and max stamina perks would be in a much higher demand, making things like vitality and such perhaps less appealing than better accuracy.
