Mariya Vasilyevna Oktyabrskaya 16 August 1905 – 15 March 1944 was a Soviet tank driver and mechanic who fought on the Eastern Front . After her husband was killed fighting in 1941, Oktyabrskaya sold her possessions to donate a tank for the war effort, and requested that she be allowed to drive it. She received and was trained to drive and fix a T-34 , which she named “Fighting Girlfriend” (“Боевая подруга”).

There were 800,000 women who served in the Soviet Armed Forces during the war which is roughly 5% of total military personnel.

Victors write the history so can you really believe that kill count? It’s obvious that Soviets been using her as a propaganda tool. I would believe other stories about females that had minor roles in the war.

The recorded achievements of female soldiers are not limited to celebrities like Lyudmila. There are many female soldiers that the Soviet Union did not use for propaganda. There are many such records in “У войны не женское лицо” that I introduced at the beginning.
It is an undeniable fact that the contributions of female soldiers laid the foundation for the Soviet Union’s victory over Germany.
